About
Fat Fish is an award-winning fish and chip shop in Annandale that has built a strong reputation across Sydney’s inner west. With well over four stars from well over a thousand reviews, it’s one of the more consistently praised spots in the area for freshly battered fish and chips done right.
The menu centres on the classics, with battered fish and chips as the signature, alongside potato scallops, burgers, salads, and a range of other seafood options. Regulars are particularly fond of the potato scallops with chicken salt, and the chips draw praise across the board for being fresh, golden, and consistently good. The salad selection is broader than most, including seafood salads that pair well with a grilled fish fillet. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available, which makes the menu accessible to a wider crowd.
The atmosphere is casual and on the trendier side for a fish and chips venue, with outdoor seating and a kids’ menu that make it a practical choice for families. The shop handles dine-in, takeaway, and delivery, so there’s flexibility depending on how you’d like to eat. Groups are well catered for too. Free street parking is nearby, and the shop is popular for both lunch and dinner service. A wait during busy periods is fairly common, so ordering ahead during the dinner rush is a smart move.

My first visit of Fat Fish was 3 years ago. My favorite combo / deal was always “Annandale Special”, which came with grilled COD fish fillet, freshly fried chips and your choice of any 1 type of salad including seafood salad without charging extra. As far as I can remember, the price of this deal was $15.9 when I first visited it, so it has only been increased by $1 to $16.9 today after 3 years past. It’s really a very good deal.
The grilled COD fish fillets of the Annandale Special meal that I tried before were consistently good, in similarly quite generous portion and of course very delicious. The chips never disappointed me and their salad were always good too.
They offer quite a big variety of different seafood / meals but I only focused on my favorite Annandale Special as it’s always good and at such a reasonable price. I am a bit regret that I have not tried much other seafood so far.
I have tried quite many different fish and chips restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne. This is always my favourite one and no other can offer the same quality as this Annandale Speacial at this price. Highly recommend for anyone who loves fish and chips to try.
14/2/25 – 3 stars
A fairly famous fish and chips shop which I had heard about online, but, after trying, it is mostly a neighbourhood favourite. Nothing wrong with a local business, but, not really worth travelling or going out of your way for.
Grilled seafood basket: A, 7/10. Fairly decent mix of prawns, mussels and calamari. Grilled fish was fairly ok. Chips were also just ok. $27 is a bit more than expected
Annandale special: S, 8/10. Same grilled fish and chips. $17 is more acceptable
We have finally found a place that served good quality food at good prices, in the inner west.
There are two shops beside each other – when does the real deal Greek Yeross gyro .
Fat fish does a grilled cod with chips and your selection from one of a dozen A grade salads . The tabouli is packed with goodness – parsley tomatoes Puis lentils that combines with the fish so well.
I took the public bus to check out this place and try their food. I ordered their (A$16) battered fish and chips, and the chips were really good since they were freshly fried. The fish was alright, but it was a bit on the thin side; they could definitely be more generous with the fillet and slice it a little thicker. Personally, I found the fillet to be too thin.
Happy customers lead to more repeat business and better word-of-mouth promotion.
The salad looked nice, but I noticed a few flies buzzing around in the display. To avoid any stomach issues, I decided not to order the salad.
The public seating right outside the shop wasn’t very clean either, as it’s exposed to the weather and birds. The tables and chairs had bird droppings on them.
Overall, it was okay for me, but since I was staying at a hotel in the CBD, it was quite rude to get there. I had to ride by over 10 bus stops to reach the shop.
Got the beer battered fish and chips pack. Fish was really nice, not too oily but still crispy. Chips were disappointing though. Not very crispy. Also they added chicken salt after putting the fish on the chips, so the chips below the fish weren’t salted at all.
Ordered just the grilled fish and some calamari rings. Menu says the fish is cod. Pretty sure what they’re actually selling is cheap frozen basa, not cod
What a delightful business to buy a meal from. The seafood is always nice, cooked properly and never had a reason to complain. Being a lover of seafood, they offer many varities and options which suits me well. Their Salads are just delighful also. Thanks Cooks and Staff. Always appreciated. Tricia
Love this place. Their fish and chips are great! Love the potato scallops with chicken salt. Their chips are amazing. I’m actually amazed that the chips are so good at all locations in the neighbourhood. The salads are also amazing. I wish the council would put out more bins to cope with the waste though.
