About
Popeye’s Fish & Chips is a dine-in fish and chip shop in Coffs Harbour, tucked into a casual setting that draws solo diners, families, and the occasional tourist looking for a sit-down meal. Free parking is available on-site and along surrounding streets, and the venue is wheelchair accessible. A kids’ menu makes it a practical stop for families passing through the area.
The shop carries calamari and a pineapple fritter on the menu, and the dining room has a relaxed, no-fuss atmosphere. Payments by debit card, credit card, and NFC mobile are all accepted.
Feedback from the past few years has been mixed. Some long-term regulars speak warmly of consistent service and feel well looked after each visit. Others have raised concerns about portion sizes and value, particularly around chip serves and the calamari. A handful of diners have also noted the fish quality can be variable. The service side of things tends to draw more positive comments across the board.
Worth checking the menu and current pricing before visiting, especially for larger groups. See opening hours below.

8 Reviews on “Popeye's Fish & Chips”
$16.50 for 2 calamari rings, chips and a pineapple fritter. Barely a handful of chips for the minimum $10 spend. Cooked like they were caught between a heated argument
Hands down the worst value fish and chips ever. 4 calamari rings, chips min serve $8 (didn’t realise minimum serve ment smallest amount we could serve) rough counting if the chips appears 15c per chip (see photos). One piece of fish a can of drink $35. Save your money and disappointment or at very least read the other very similar reviews of others that got ripped off also.
I truly wish we had as way too many similar reviews and I’m sure countless other tourists like us that haven’t bothered.
I have never posted a bad review for small local business before but after seeing so many similar people saying the same things I hope this saves someone from experiencing the same rip off meal we did.
The only positive thing I have to say is that the service here was good. The fish was very bland and tough like it was frozen for too long and overcooked, and judging by the brown stains (not Maillard effect) the grilled fish was cooked on a filthy grill. It was also a little off putting that there was a surcharge for grilling fish and the owner was extremely pushy that we pay in cash using the correct change.
Ordered fish and chips. Was not given choice of battered or crumbed. Was told crumbed was extra. Limited choice of fish type. Asked for Chicken salt, got ordinary salt.
I had a very disappointing experience with this business. I called to place an order for pickup because I was short on time, and I asked the staff member to tell me what pack options were available since I couldn’t find them online. Instead, he told me I would need to come into the store to see the options.
I explained that I wanted to order over the phone and simply pick it up, as I didn’t have time to wait around in-store. His response was “If you don’t have time to look at the options here, then you don’t have time to pick up the food” and he then hung up on me. This was at 4:30 pm—not even during a busy dinner rush.
I ended up calling Banana Coast Seafood afterward, and they were extremely helpful. They told me their pack options right away and had my order ready in 15 minutes
Best fish and chips! Very friendly owner, fast service and the freshest food.
Been coming here for over 20 years, great service and we are always looked after
Average at best. Chips frozen and poor customer service…
