About
John Dory’s Takeaway, known locally as Kippy’s, is a family-owned fish and chip shop in Lemon Tree Passage on the NSW Mid North Coast. It’s a casual, unfussy spot that does the basics well, with a menu built around fresh seafood and burgers alongside the classics you’d expect.
Generous serves are a recurring theme, with the fish and chips reportedly more than enough for two to share if appetites are modest. The shop offers variety in its fish selection, with gem fish and hoki among the options, and the cooking is noted for being fresh and well-executed. Crumbed gem fish with fries has drawn particular praise from visitors passing through. Prices are reasonable for the serves on offer, though drinks can add to the bill. The staff are friendly and helpful, with a welcoming atmosphere that suits families and solo travellers alike.
Dine-in and takeaway are both available, with outdoor seating and free parking on-street and in the adjoining lot. A kids’ menu makes it a practical stop for families, and the shop is open across breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. Credit cards, debit cards, and contactless payments are all accepted.
It’s a solid option for anyone exploring Lemon Tree Passage and after a straightforward, filling meal. Phone ahead during busy dinner periods to avoid a wait.

Fantastic fish and chips! Highly recommended. Even 1 fish and chips would be enough to feed 2 people so no need to order 2 unless your super hungry. Prices on the food were reasonable, however the drinks costs were pretty expensive for a small shop.
Great meal at a price unseen in any large town these days. Excellent taste and quantity! Clean, warm and welcoming environment. The staff were also very helpful with local knowledge and recommendations. A pleasure to dine at such a wonderful establishment! Thank you very much!
Staff are friendly and the location is beautiful however the food and price for quality is a huge let down.
$80+ for “fish” that ended up in the bin.
The battered fish barely deserves the word fish in the title as it was basically non existent.
The scollop was undercooked with the batter like mush and the potato still raw.
No lemon, tartare provided and the extra chicken salt that was requested did not make an appearance either.
Part of the order was also forgotten meaning we had to drive back to collect it, they did apologise for this and then provided the salt, lemon and tartare after us bringing it up.
The pinapple fritta however was beautifully done.
I’d like to think this experience was due to the place being busy, this is the second time I’ve order the fish from this venue however and both times have been the same
Perfectly nice place for an afternoon fish & chips! We ordered the Fish & Chips for two (attached photo shows 1 of the boxes). Quite generous serving size, nicely battered, good value. Lots of places to sit and a nice view of the park and water. Recommended.
The Fish and chips were delicious with excellent quality and great value. There is also a good outdoor area to sit down, enjoy your food, the sunshine and the amazing view. Definitely recommended if you are visiting the area or live nearby.
Ordered a fish and chips pack for 2. 1 Gem fish and one Hoki. Fabulous. Superbly cooked, fresh and tasty. Sat at the Gin bar behind and watched the sunset. Can’t go wrong coming here for a feed.
The fish and chips was the best I’ve had in a long time. The crumbed gem fish and fries was top notch. Great to have fries and not the usual chips. Yum!! Excellent service also. Thank you Team!
Grilled fish was fresh and seasoned perfectly. Chips and calamari were crispy and loved the addition of beets in the salad. Fantastic lunch all round
