About
The Hills Ocean Foods is a no-frills fish and chip shop in Northmead that keeps things simple and satisfying. The menu leans into the classics, with battered fish and chips as the signature, and regulars note the chips are thick-cut and generously portioned. The batter is known for its crunch when the kitchen is firing, and family meal deals are freshly fried to order. Calamari draws solid praise as well, and the fish burger is worth a mention for those after something a little different.
Opinions on the food are split in places. Most regulars describe great value and quick service, and the old-school approach to a Northmead fish and chips experience has its loyal following. A handful of recent visits have flagged greasier results, so it can depend on timing. The shop is cash only, so it pays to come prepared.
The Hills Ocean Foods is available for takeaway and delivery, with a kids’ menu making it a practical choice for families. There is no dine-in seating, but free street parking keeps things easy for a quick pickup. Open for lunch and dinner, it holds a solid four-plus star reputation across a healthy number of reviews.
Phone ahead during the dinner rush to keep wait times down.

Great local fish and chips store. We ordered the family meal. Everything was freshly fried to order. Calamari was a stand out. Large chips were huge, our family couldn’t even eat half of them.
Do note:
1. They only accept cash.
2. It’s take out only.
3. Chicken salt contains Msg.
Not only is the food great here, but the value is even better! We need more of these no frills, old school fish and chip joints!
Got the WA whiting fish and chips and battered oysters. Really good not super greasy and fresh. Old fashioned fish and chip take away place. Service was brisk could have been a bit friendlier but we came after the lunch rush so I can understand.
We were visiting the area and this was great find.
Service was poor. Unable to communicate with staff. When told there were allergies and wanting to confirm the presence of flour, the staff said they don’t understand.
Had to go back in 3 times because the food handed over was not what had been ordered.
Ordered grilled fish because I can’t eat wheat, so to have just read in reviews that you routinely flour the grill… Well, that’s pretty damn disappointing! I can now anticipate being unwell for the coming days. Lucky for me I didn’t eat very much because it didn’t taste good anyway.
Needless to say, we will not be returning or recommending to others.
I’ve driven past this location many times and have seen it busy. Had to try at least once. I bought some crab claws and a Fish Burger. The crab claws weren’t the best I’ve had however the Fish Burger was delicious, I loved the grilled onions which was a different taste with fish.
The service was not overly personable and just very ‘to the point’
Also, the shop is looking a little run down, could do with a refurbishment
We have been buying takeaway from this shop for years. The food is great but they never invest in regulars and are often atrociously late with starting phone orders
They don’t seem to br invested st all in serving their regulars in a small community
Fish and chips no good. Winston hills Billy’s is better. Burger ok.
Excellent quality fish shop. The best in the district. Amazing batter fish and cocktails too, so crunchy and always consistent top quality 10mm chips. As fresh as it gets and not too much oil on the base of the tray like too many other shops
