About
Alawa Fish & Chips sits in the northern Darwin suburb of Alawa, offering a broader menu than most fish and chip shops in the Territory. Alongside the classic fish and chips combo, the kitchen turns out burgers, savoury curries, and Nepalese dumplings (Momo), making it a genuine mixed-menu spot rather than a straight seafood-only takeaway. The menu highlights also include a Mexico Breakfast Potato Fry and Madagasca Lobster for those after something a little different.
The shop operates as both a dine-in restaurant and a takeaway, with delivery available for those who can’t make the trip. It’s a family-friendly venue with a kids’ menu, wheelchair accessible, and free parking on-site. Staff friendliness comes up regularly, with the front counter team known for a welcoming approach and the occasional unexpected extra. There are accounts of the shop going out of its way to sort things out when third-party delivery has let a customer down.
Potato cakes and crumbed barramundi get solid mentions, with portion sizes described as decent and prices reasonable. Calamari is another option regulars return to. That said, the fish quality can be inconsistent, with some visits delivering freshly fried results and others falling short on texture.
For anyone near Darwin looking for a fish and chip shop that also covers curries, dumplings, and burgers all under one roof, Alawa Fish & Chips is worth considering. Check the menu below and phone ahead during busy periods to confirm availability.

The place ain’t much to look at but the food was good, I got some Barra which they crumbed fresh and the cup of calamari and chips which was a decent size.. they didn’t have a few items on the menu at the time I was there like scollops and wedges but the lady was very friendly explaining this to me.
Horrible. The photo says it all. The photo is of their ‘potato cakes’. Inedible. The batter on the fish was chewy, spongy and ruined the piece of fish. The chips looked like they were going to be crispy and tasty but unfortunately they were soggy.
Probably my favourite Fish & Chips in Darwin I don’t come here very often but everytime I get food here it’s good real good
Battered Salmon and Potato Cakes yum 😋
The place is run by Indians so you can also get Currys etc
But I’ll stick to Fish & Chips
Good place, visited earlier this afternoon for the first time to get some fish and chips. Price was reasonable, taste good, glad to have a chat with Anthony. Very friendly guy, loves chatting to customers, friendly attitude. Overall I’m satisfied. Have been seeing the sign for the last couple of years, didn’t get chance to visit. Bought fish and chips with chicken nuggets- my children loved them. Will definitely go back again soon. All the best Anthony 🙂
I ordered barramundi fish and chips today. The shop wasn’t crowded so I was served quickly with freshly-fried food. The front staff even gave me a bottle of sparking water for free.
It was a lovely experience. Highly recommended!
Cons: the view was normal. There were only 3 small tables for waiting and quickly eating.
Since when does a hamburger with the lot NOT have any salad???? Patty was generic, bland (probably frozen), tasteless. Ordered no egg due to allergy and guess what? Yep, it came with egg!!! Batter on fish was not cooked properly, still gooey on inside. Fish cake was just yuk. Only saving grace was the chips. Would not order here again. BIG disappointment 😞
Flake was tough as nails so obviously not fresh, batter was indian inspired, sorry but not how Ilike my fish. All looked overcooked, potato cakes were good enough. Chips good size but not crispy
This was not classic fish and chips. Chips came in a take away box like you’d get at a roadhouse, chicken salt was good but very heavy. Grilled barramundi was in a plastic take away container and not very nice, didn’t even eat half of it. The potato cakes were a dark brown with an odd batter, which was disappointing. Partner had a burger he said was alright. Would not go back for fish and chips.
