About
JJ’s Fish and Chips has earned a strong reputation as one of the top fish and chip shops in the Northern Territory, operating out of Nightcliff foreshore in Rapid Creek. With close to five stars across dozens of reviews, this is a spot that locals clearly hold in high regard, and word travels fast about the quality on offer here.
The menu centres on a signature combination of fish and chips served with prawns and calamari, and the freshness of the fish is what regulars keep coming back for. The batter is consistently crispy, the chips are generous and well-cooked, and portions are the kind that leave you satisfied rather than wondering where the rest of it went. Greek dessert specials add a welcome point of difference to the menu. The staff are friendly and unhurried, happy to chat while they serve, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere at the foreshore location.
JJ’s is a popular family-friendly takeaway, open for both lunch and dinner. During peak meal times, a short wait is not unusual, so arriving a little early is a good idea. Wheelchair-accessible facilities and free parking are available on site, making it straightforward for most visitors to get there.
Prices are broadly reasonable, though experiences vary depending on what you order. For anyone passing through the Darwin area or looking for fish and chips near Rapid Creek, this is a well-regarded choice that draws a loyal crowd. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to save yourself a wait.

The best fish & chips in the NT. The owner and staff are friendly. The prices are reasonable. Located right near the beach to watch the sunset.
Great fish & chips! The owner and staff are friendly and the prices are reasonable. Located right near the beach to catch the breeze. Great place to take the family.
Read the reviews so was prepared for a wait – especially if this has a google rating of 4.7…
But told 45 mins: was 70 minutes. Which we didn’t care because nice afternoon and was prepared to wait for a good meal. Unfortunately meal was not good.
$13 per bit of fish – was so soggy, thin, and almost the same size as a calarmari ring. $39 for this was not good – especially how thin it was, couldn’t pick it up it just fell apart. Have no idea how this place can be rated so high
One piece of fish didn’t taste right. I try to break it down and examine the similarities between pork and fish. Looks more like a pork. Honestly, in my own opinion, Harry’s Fish and Chips are better and the best in Darwin
Came for dinner quite early, around 5, and the service was so fast and the fish was hot and fresh and so crispy… with generous portions too! The chips were also amazing! The ladies serving were so friendly, serving and chatting to everyone with smiles. 100% would return.
We had heard of the quality of this establishment. Took it with a grain of salt. Everyone has “a place”. We tried it this week. There is, honestly, no place like this. The ladies are awesome. The atmosphere is relaxed. But the food…the food is truly next level. My wife and I have been in Darwin for over 50 years and this is by far the best fish and chips ( prawns, calamari ) we have ever had. It is truly a must. They’re at Nightcliff foreshore every day. Admittedly the only fish and chips we have ever reheated. Five out of five easily.
The wait was long and not worth it. It’s too pricey.
This is a $15 steak burger -it’s a sad looking one. So much I want to support local businesses but they also have to put some love in the food they are selling. It’s disappointing.
Really fresh and delicious! The fish and chips were super yummy. Service was lovely and you can’t beat eating fish and chips while watching the sunset in Darwin.
