About
Ballantynes Fish & Chips is a Rosebery institution that has built a steady following over the years, drawing in locals and newcomers alike with a menu centred on fresh fish and classic sides. The signature pairing of flake and barramundi with chips is the clear crowd favourite, and for anyone new to the Northern Territory looking to scope out a reliable fish and chip shop, this one comes up regularly in conversation.
The menu runs broader than just fish. Battered snapper, prawns, and steak sandwiches all feature, and the serves are generally generous. Regulars note the pricing is fair, and phone-ahead orders tend to move quickly from counter to hand, making it a practical stop for families wanting a fuss-free meal. Dine-in seating is available for those who prefer to sit down, and delivery through third-party services means Ballantynes reaches well beyond the immediate neighbourhood.
The shop is family-friendly and welcomes a wide range of diners, from those grabbing a quick solo lunch to groups making a proper sit-down occasion of it. Quality and consistency do vary across visits according to a spread of recent feedback, so ordering during peak service periods when turnover is high tends to produce the best results.
Ballantynes is women-owned and LGBTQ+ friendly. Phone ahead during busy dinner periods to keep wait times short.

8 Reviews on “Ballantynes Fish & Chips”
After 2 decades in the game, they know their stuff! Fast service (high turnover) with good size and valued meals. I had the burger with the lot. (Inc: egg, bacon, beetroot & pineapple. That’s what i call with ‘The Lot!’)
Snapper, chips & Salad for my wife. Both were stunning.
I got some chips to go with my Burger. The serving was very generous. I couldn’t finish them.
There was a stream of customers and phone orders coming in. They said 15 – 20 mins. It was 15. Spot on.
Keep up the good work!
Ordered
2 x Steak Sandwhiches
1 x Snapper battered
2 x Prawns battered
The food was quite fast actually about 10 minutes to get my good.
I was a bit hesitant because of the other 1 star reviews but honestly thought the food was pretty good definitely well above most fish and chip places in the area.
If the chips were crispier I’d have given it 5 stars I believe this place is 2nd only to Frying Nemo
This has to be the worst fish and chips I have had in a very long time. Fish was dry and rubbery, chips were soggy and the salt and pepper squid….. Battered rings aren’t salt and pepper squid. Better was thick and greasy on the squid and the flavour less fish bites. Very expensive for the poor quality. Very disappointed.
When I order and wait for a meal and then drove home to find it isn’t of decent quality, I shouldn’t have to then spend more time reaching out to you for a solution when my family now has to find another option for dinner.
I visited this shop for the first time on December 14, 2025, at approximately 7:30 p.m. and paid $23.62. My order was taken by a young Caucasian woman who was polite and helpful. During my visit, another young Caucasian woman approached the counter to assist a different customer. As staff do not wear name tags, I was unable to identify her, though she appeared to be short in stature. Her behavior made me feel uncomfortable. The owner can review her conduct by viewing the CCTV footage.
The same woman later delivered my meal and again behaved in a disrespectful manner. This led me to feel that her actions may have been influenced by prejudice toward people of Indian appearance. Regardless of ethnicity, all customers contribute to the success of a business, and treating individuals differently based on appearance is unacceptable.
In addition, the food quality was poor. The fish did not taste fresh, and the meal was severely overcooked and very hard. Typically, fish and chips are served with a slice of lemon, which I did not receive. The container included only fish and calamari, without the expected accompaniments. Due to this experience, I will not be returning to this café.
Amazing! Always have to try out the local fish and chip shop when you move to a new area ( interstate) and we were not disappointed. Tried a wide variety of things from the menu and everything was absolutely perfect. Fresh, cooked well and more than enough for a family of 4 with leftovers. Probably the best fish and chips we’ve had. Hopefully it’s consistent but from tonights order, we are extremely happy. Service from the phone order to pick up in store – absolutely spot on.
Great price and good quality – ordered flake, barra and chips. Some confusion with chip order as the menu says feeds 2 and I needed 2 lots of it for 4 people but got 4 boxes. Suggest they rename to make ordering clearer.
Overall, would eat here again.
Asked if all seafood could be packed separately to non seafood items due to a family members allergies. This was completely ignored and with missing items. It’s a shame because the food is nice but I won’t be purchasing food from here again unless it can be made sure to packed seperate.
Thanks for your apology I have updated my review to reflect.
I was skeptical about the poor reviews for this place so decided to go try myself, Paid $45 for juts two flakes and chips, the fish was extremely oily, upto a point that I had to use several tissue papers just to soak up the excess oil. The chips were stale with minimal salt on them. Long wait with poor quality food, never going there again!
