About
Chumley Warner’s Traditional British Fish & Chips has carved out a strong reputation in Birkdale, drawing visitors from well beyond the local area for its traditional British-style take on fish and chips. With a solid four-plus stars across well over a thousand reviews, it is one of the more talked-about fish and chip shops on the Redlands Coast.
The menu leans firmly into its British roots. Mushy peas and vinegar alongside a serve of hot chips is a combination regulars rave about, and battered sausages are another favourite worth tracking down. The shop is known for cooking to order, which means waits of around twenty minutes at peak times, though most who visit consider that a fair trade for food that arrives fresh rather than sitting under a heat lamp. The batter itself is lighter than it looks, a point that catches many first-timers pleasantly off guard.
Chumley Warner’s offers both dine-in and takeaway, with outdoor seating available for those who want to settle in. A bar on site stocks beer, wine, and spirits, which adds a relaxed, sit-down feel that goes beyond the standard fish-and-chip-shop experience. The venue is fully wheelchair accessible, family friendly, and well set up for groups, with free parking on site. It serves lunch and dinner daily, including brunch and dessert options.
Bookings are not taken, so arriving early during busy periods is a smart move. Phone ahead to check wait times before making the drive.

We went today my husband got fish and me and my daughter got batterd sausage food was yum we drive from forest lake reminds me of home also got some goodies too from the little shop well worth the drive
Found this place thru tiktok and definitely worth the drive over to Birkdale.
The chips are my new favourite hot chips with mushy peas and vinegar you gotta try it.
The food looks deceptively greasy but its not.
The counter girls are really friendly and helpful.
Lovely staff. Pricey and the food is not to my liking at all sorry… Super greasy batter on the cod. The chips were also soggy with grease and tasted very unpleasant without any salt or seasoning. Generous serving sizes.
I have deleted my original 2 Star review for over 2 years ago as I believe this business has massively shifted in quality.
Food today was right up there, close to perfect!
Even when it is probably the busiest I have seen it, the wait time was reasonable and the food was yummy.
It definitely hinges on who the fryer is that day and we have had some really good meals over the last 6 months, however when we had the wrong fryer the food was average.
Hoping the new owners keep this up!
Very disappointing. We drove here specially for fish and chips as its always been so good.
This trip the fish was awful. The fish was half the size of what it previously has been. It was also very overcooked and extremely dry. The batter wasnt the same as normal. The wally was soft and didnt have the usual crunch. The only saving grace was the chips. Luckily these were up to normal standard hence the 3 stars….
Always love visiting this place, it’s always busy and the wait is normally around 20 minutes but at least the food is freshly cooked. Mine this time was a bit oily I’m guessing as they are in a hurry to get the food out. I’d prefer to wait that extra couple of mins while the oil drains from the batter. Overall really good. Fish bites are amazing when they have them.
A real shame. Our family have been loyal to this shop for years, beside always wondering why even being such a regular customer (and spending good bucks $$ every time) the staff never acknowledged you or showed friendliness towards us. We have noticed a huge and sad decline in the food and the quality. Sad to say I would quicker travel back to Britain for decent Fish & Chips than to Chumley Warner’s again. Today we decided to try it again in the hopes we may have just had a string of bad luck… but it was the ‘final nail in the coffin’ It was disgusting, we ordered Atlantic Cod and got some cheap alternative..but they still fell free to charge your $16 a serve. No acknowledgement or respect from staff – Management need to realise that buying food is about emotions, and no way do this shop offer anything that touches emotions apart from leaving a good customer feeling sour about buying from them again! Sorry folks, but you will have to make up over $300 per month in sales some other way, as we are absolutely NOT coming back. We have been robbed for too long.
I was genuinely looking forward to trying this place for the first time tonight, but I’m honestly not sure what happened. If Australia ever runs dry on its 90-day fuel security bedding, the government should just come here; you’d be sorted in a weekend.
The amount of oil on everything was..and I’m being literal here…absurd. My mouth is currently coated in a film of lard that I suspect might be waterproof.
The Breakdown:
The Fish: Actually the best part. Underneath the slick, the quality was there.
The Chips: My lord… does anyone care anymore? Soggy, heavy, and drowning.
The Battered Sav: At nearly $10 a piece, I expected a premium snack. Instead, it was a dry, sad disappointment that tasted like it had been sitting in the back of the shop since the mid-nineties.
I’ve had world-class fish and chips in the U.K., and while I’m not trying to run this place down..clearly others enjoy it.. this was a massive miss. Maybe it was just a “bad oil day,” but seriously, sort the drainage. Otherwise, you’re going to find yourself being “liberated” by a certain oil-hungry superpower any day now.
