About
Strait Off The Boat Takeaway has built a well-deserved reputation in Devonport for serving some of the freshest seafood you’ll find at any fish and chip shop in Tasmania. The name says it all: the shop sources its catch from Bass Strait’s sustainably managed fisheries, and that commitment to freshness comes through on the plate. Battered flathead is the signature, and the homemade potato cakes draw their own loyal following. Gummy shark and blue grenadier round out a solid menu that gives diners genuine choice, with fish available battered, crumbed, or grilled.
Portions are generous, and regulars note that the pricing stays reasonable for the quality on offer. Service is quick and friendly, which matters when the place is busy, and it does get busy. The dining area is compact, so many visitors opt for takeaway or kerbside pickup, both of which are well catered for. The shop is fully wheelchair accessible and free parking is available nearby.
Families are well looked after, with a kids’ menu and high chairs on hand. Groups and tourists passing through on their way to or from the Spirit of Tasmania often make a point of stopping in, and it’s easy to see why. For a fish and chips experience in Devonport that leans on genuinely local, sustainably sourced Tasmanian seafood, this spot delivers the goods across lunch and dinner service.

We weren’t feeling really hungry so we were just looking to have something quick and easy to share. This place was perfect for that.
6 of us shared a fisherman box and a seafood basket (total A$47). There’s a small dining area and it was relatively clean. Taste? Tasted just like how deep fried food should taste like. We finished the whole lot. The young men working there were friendly too.
Was told would be ready in 5-10 minutes.
Turned into 30.
Fish was great! But the chips were horrible. Over cooked and un-edible.
Second time i have came here and experienced the same issue. Thought it was maybe a one off.
Dont think i would return. Better flake and chips from the local take away shops. Atleast the chips are edible.
Awesome place to get a great fresh seafood with reasonable price. Good taste, good and fast service. Recommended! The place is just a bit small, many people do take away.
straight from the boat to the plate — incredibly fresh, beautifully cooked, and full of clean ocean flavour. A simple dish done perfectly. Highly recommended.
Great place to eat in or take away.
Friendly staffs, great prices, great portions.
So many options of fish battered, crumbled or grilled.
Definitely a recommended in the area.
Hands down the best fish and chips!! Everything was so fresh and delicious! We had battered flathead, homemade potato cakes and chippies, and every bite was absolutely divine. The portions were huge and we left completely satisfied. We’d come back here in a heartbeat!
Best Fish & Chips we have ever had! We found this little back street fish monger place on google while waiting for the Spirit & it was hands down the best F&C weve have ever had. The kitchen was due to close but the lovely young fella whipped up a batch of blue eye & chips for us, huge portions, beautiful, light, crispy batter! 😋 Oh and takeaway scollop & gummy pies where really good too.
Our go to place for fish n chips when in Devonport. Fish that melts in your mouth with the crispiest light batter. Always good sized servings and never leave hungry.
