About
The Fish Van is a well-rated fish and chip shop operating from a mobile setup on the Triabunna Esplanade, making it a popular stop for locals and visitors passing through Tasmania’s East Coast. With a solid four-plus stars across hundreds of reviews, it has built a strong following for doing the simple things well.
The fish is consistently fresh, lightly battered, well seasoned, and served hot in classic paper wrapping. Flake is a favourite, with generous serves drawing plenty of repeat visitors. Potato cakes, prawns, and squid round out the menu alongside a handful of other seafood options. Hamburgers and steak burgers also get a mention as genuinely good, making this more than just a standard fish-and-chips van. Portions are noted as hearty and the pricing honest, so it’s easy to see why the word spreads quickly among travellers doing the Maria Island run.
The setup is casual and relaxed, with outdoor seating, free parking, and wheelchair access. Beer and coffee are available alongside the food, which makes it a comfortable spot for a longer sit-down even without a traditional dine-in room. The venue is family friendly, dogs are welcome, and the atmosphere suits everyone from solo diners to groups stopping in for lunch or dinner.
Takeaway is available, and the van serves both the lunch and dinner crowds. Phone ahead during busy periods if you’re on a tight timeline.

Prob the best fish & chips we’ve had so far. The fish was super fresh, lightly battered, well seasoned and served in an authentic paper wrap. Huge serve too. Really decent price so it was great value. Came here based on local reccs and they were totally right. Would highly recommend hitting this place if you’re coming thru
What a great find on the Triabunna Esplanade just past the Spring Bay Hotel. The Fish Van is a fish-n-chip shack with a handful of fish selections along with squid, prawns and a handful of sides that are freshly prepared and served hot, perfect for those seeking a bite to eat after returning from a day out at Maria Island. Opening hours are 11am to 7.30pm daily.
There are a handful of outdoor bench style tables or just do take-away and eat your fish-n-chips on the esplanade somewhere. We ordered the Trevalla (Blue-eye) which was fired very nice, fillet was soft, tender and good flavour, chips were just fine. Tartar sauce came with the order, no lemon wedges however. This was have been nice. Luckily we had some back in our campervan. Enjoyed Fish Van and would gladly return to order from here again.
Fish and chips were excellent
Fresh cooked hot and crispy served with lemon and tartare sauce. Generous servings
Hamburger and Steak burger also terrific
Well worth stopping in for lunch or dinner after the Maria Island trip
Well priced, lovely staff and great food
Had a great Sunday lunch of fish and chips from the Fish Van. We tried several places on the coast to get fish n chips but seemed it was too hard. Found the fish van great prices we ordered two flake and chips. Plus potatoes cakes and scallops. Given a buzzer as all food is freshly cooked to order, and it shows! Happy staff.
Tables outside and a row of bar seating.
If you’re in the area definitely worth a visit.
Do yourself a favour and skip this rancid oil deep fryery. This is just another instance of a business dedicated to ruining wonderful fresh seafood. You’re welcomed by a smell of rancid oil, served rubbery deep-fried pieces of fish leftovers and sauces that look, feel and taste like glue. On top of that the grilled fish was possibly boiled.
Gave it a go as place was packed, worst chips I have ever had! Pre cooked, then over cooked. The seafood was as not fresh, cutlets and s&p squid frozen bulk seafood, calamari rings not a nice texture ( worked for a number of years with fresh seafood at sea, so know what fresh and cooked properly is) and all the crumb fell. One piece of fish had a foul taste to it. The sign at the front asks people to be patient, kind and courteous, got my order the girl snatched my buzzer, shoved my order into my hands without any eye contact and moved on before I even got a thank you out 😳. Drive to Bicheno and go to the Lobster Shack instead!
Have to wait patiently to get your food. Fish and seafood are fresh and great. We ate them in our campervan due to the strong wind outside the fish van.
Someone we met on our travels hyped this place up to us and on first sight it looks the business. Who doesn’t like fish and chips on the sea front? The place looks a bit bougie, all chalk boards and big tables, and your order comes in cute paper cones. The food itself was just average though, with a special shout out to the chips which were below par. Overall, they scrape into a four star review on the basis of the presentation, the location and the romanticism of the idea of fish and chips on the coast, if not the execution.
