About
Anchor Fish Bar & Grill brings something a little different to the Avondale Heights dining scene. This is not your average suburban fish and chip shop. The menu bridges classic old-school favourites with modern gourmet seafood dishes, and the freshness of the produce is something regulars consistently notice. Fish arrives golden and well-cooked, calamari is a firm favourite, and the prawns and chips round out a menu that gives people plenty of reason to return.
The setup here is a step above most local chippies. Dine-in seating accommodates families, and there is a private area available for larger groups. Outdoor seating adds to the atmosphere, and a bar on site means it suits more than a quick takeaway run. A dedicated kids’ menu makes it an easy choice for parents with young children, and halal food is available. Takeaway and delivery are both on offer for those who prefer to eat at home.
Anchor has earned a solid reputation across its 354 reviews, with many regulars happy to travel some distance specifically for a meal here. Service is described as warm, professional, and genuinely attentive. Portion sizes and value draw mixed opinions, with some finding the serves generous and others feeling the balance has shifted, so it is worth knowing this is positioned as a quality dining experience rather than a budget feed. The grilled options, including grenadier, draw particular praise alongside the fried classics.
For fish and chips in the western suburbs of Melbourne, Anchor Fish Bar & Grill is a strong option. Phone ahead during busy periods, as the dinner rush can move quickly.

Well, well, well… What do we have here? What the hell is a Fish and Chips shop of this high calibre, doing in the suburbs?!?!
Firstly, the service from the crew was warm and courteous. They engaged customers and ensured food was out in a jiffy. They were accommodating and nothing was too difficult.
The atmosphere? Very inviting, clean and spacious. It was pretty hot inside and there were fans placed around (I think maybe the air-conditioning wasn’t working properly), but I can hardly blame them for what was already a pretty hot day. Also bonus points for having free chicken salt available for customers. Nice touch 😀
And now, the food… SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! The family voted both the grilled and crumbed calamari were the best we’ve had and that the potato cake was second to none! The different fish varieties were delicious and even the sides were very tasty (chips, salad and rice). Those Soft-shell sliders were also next level. A special shoutout for having the real Italian Peroni, none of this local stuff!
Prices were very reasonable when considering portion sizes and above all else, quality. We’ll be back…
Ive ordered fish & chips meals from here before and are of a good serve and is fresh. My review pertains to this branch possible running a dark uber pizza kitchen? If so the margarita was missing the fresh basil as pictured and shown on the menu.
Went here for late lunch so it was very quiet. The great weather perfectly complimented the meal I had. The grilled grenadier was nicely seasoned and the batter for the fried items were also perfect. We had the meal for 2 and requested the chips to be replaced with Greek salad. Will definitely come back!
My favorite restaurant for great fish and chips! When I think of Anchor, my mouth starts watering lol To my husband and I, we have not had better in such a long time (and my husband is so critical of fish and chips). We gladly travel 45 minutes to sit down at this restaurant. The chips are exactly how all fish and chip shops should make them.. crunchy, full of flavour and not overly salted- NOT crap chips that are floppy, sad and bland. Quite the opposite. Thankyou guys for getting this simple thing RIGHT! The fish is lightly battered and easy 9/10. The salads are so modish, I couldn’t stop eating the fresh beetroot salad and want the dressing recipe. The cabbage slaw is great aswell and pairs so nicely with fish. Lovely atmosphere, music is clean and upbeat, decor is gorgeous, love the sail/ anchor look and copper basins in the rest rooms. The sizing of the food is generous and is fairly priced for this quality and quantity . Staff are always pleasant and food comes out timely. Thankyou Cooks- this is the only fish and chip place we go to now and highly rate. Please keep up the good work, spread the word of your business and we will be back for sure. Will post again with photos.
We love coming here, it’s become our go-to spot with my toddler. The staff are always super welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Their menu has tons of choices and prices for everyone. Yeah, it might cost a bit, but you’re getting quality and huge portions. We always have leftovers to take home. Their fish, calamari, prawns, and chips are cooked perfectly, golden brown. Even after 20 minutes, the food stays crispy.
This place has lots of seating, great for families or events. We even had a family get-together of 20 here, and it was perfect in our private area. What I really love is how family-friendly it is.
They also serve alcohol and coffee.
This has become our favorite local fish and chips place!
Paid 32 dollars for this and honestly it feels like a joke. The portion is tiny, the presentation is sloppy, and nothing about this meal justifies that price. A few fries thrown in, a couple of prawns, and a dry skewer is not a premium meal
it’s a rip-off. And the worst part? The portion keeps getting smaller every time while the price stays the same. Anchor Restaurant is basically charging more for less. This is daylight robbery, and I won’t be ordering from them again.
Came here for lunch with my wife one Sunday on the recommendation of friends. Ordered the pack for two with 2 extra fried Dim Sims.
Firstly when ordering l asked the attendant if we could upgrade the chips from small to large. On the menu small chips are $9 and large are $12. So l expected to pay an extra $3 and the pack for two came with a small chips serve. But no had to pay extra $4. Ok.
The food
Chips served hot but lots of chips were inedible due to not having been cleaned properly before cooking. Large serve and edible chips were crispy to our liking.
The Fish (Blue Grenadier) was a little oily. The Prawns suffered from being to oily as well. The Potato Cake and Calamari were tasty and not oily. The Tartare sauce was tasty. The Fried Dim Sims were ok.
The time we ate was between 12and 1pm and the place was not busy in fact there were only another two tables of 3 and 2 patrons.
Overall a little bit disappointing. We had the oil taste repeating on us for over 3 hours afterwards.
Just didn’t work for us today unfortunately.
Visited Anchor Fish Bar for the first time and was really impressed. The service was friendly and professional even the young guy at the counter (who happens to be pretty good‑looking) kept everything running smoothly. The food was excellent: fresh fish, crisp batter, and perfectly cooked chips. Could not fault the meal. I’ll definitely be back.
