About
Fish & Chips at Cowes General Store is a casual spot on Phillip Island serving up fish and chips to locals and visitors alike. Housed in a building that feels like a traditional general store, it does a straightforward job well: fresh fish, crunchy chips, and honest prices that keep families coming back.
The menu features classic fish and chip shop fare, with whiting appearing as a popular fish of the day option. Regulars note the oil is consistently fresh, which shows in the chips. A meal for a family of six lands at a reasonable price point, and orders come out hot. Staff are upfront about wait times, which makes the whole experience a little more relaxed, especially during busy periods when the town itself is packed.
The shop has well-rated reviews across a solid base of feedback, with many describing it as the best fish and chips on Phillip Island. That’s a reasonable claim for a place that keeps the quality consistent across visits. Dine-in and takeaway are both available, outdoor seating is on offer, and the venue is family friendly with accessible parking and entrance. On-site and street parking make it easier to reach than many spots in the area.
Open for lunch, dinner, and brunch, it suits a wide range of visit times. Phone ahead during peak periods to get your order in early.

8 Reviews on “Fish & Chips ! Cowes General Store”
Best fish & chips in Cowes? I would say they are the best on the island!
A simple meal at a fish & chip store can often be disappointing and stomach wrenching.
The General store offers excellent fresh fish (whiting was the fish of the day today) which is the signature of excellent take-away dining in this genre.
Dim-sims a little under-cooked, chips absolutely perfect and quick-style service makes this eatery the number one go-to for families and visitors to the island alike.
There is a seating area and waiting area but no toilet or ample parking.
Still we came here for the excellent fish – and they delivered!
10/10 for the food. 9/10 for service. 6/10 for facilities.
We came by for our evening meal. We had a lovely Chicken Schnitzel Burger and a Fish Burger with some chips. We found order was made fresh and hot. The staff was also helpful with our order.
Nice fish and chips, very fresh. Over $60 for a family of 6 which isn’t too bad though per fish is about $9 each. Could have eaten more to feel full however the quality was nice. Located in a building that looks like any old general store
I love fish & chips, but unfortunately this shop was a massive disappointment.
Very oily ( most likely not been changed in a while)
Fish was cooked pretty fast , so outside was golden, inside not cooked properly.
Had to whiz up to Coles and brought some frozen barramundi and chips and cooked them in the air fryer.
😔
My partner and I decided to get fish and chips for dinner, I rang the store at 6:30, we were told 30min when we arrived, we were told to wait a extra 20min after we asked about where our food was we were told that it was third in the line and wasn’t started yet after another 30min, we finally got our food with no apologies for the wait, the food was unsalted and not even lukewarm and wasn’t cooked properly. The staff was incompetent and with no customer service skills beside the one gentleman who was running around and doing everything while everyone else was standing around looking confused. They kept putting food in the warmer instead of calling the orders out so people could get their food once it was ready. Wouldn’t recommend
I ate here a couple of times while in town. Prices are reasonable, they let me know upfront how long the order would take to be ready. Parking here is easier than I expected given how busy town was. Everything I ordered was hot & fresh when I received it. I had questions on a couple of menu items which the staff answered accurately.
The inside is a bit sad, there is space for them to have places for people to sit inside and eat but it’s just empty space. Outside there are some picnic tables
Today we (a friend of me and myself) went there, as we hoped to get the nest burger of the island. Because we liked the ingredients, we ordered an “Island Burger”, but due to the many ingredients, it just fell apart and decomposed completely, so that it was impossible to eat it, as the burger bun (the roll) was far too soft, that it would have been able to contain all the ingredients. At the end of the day, we had to grab the ingredients with our fingers from the paper. Cutlery was not available. – So, we had to take a shower afterwards.
So, perhaps it would be a good idea, to give the both of us a free burger as a compendation for the both of us for all the trouble, we had, but please use a better bun (roll). – Thanks.
We have ordered from here twice in the past week. Both times the orders have been great! Fresh oil, and tasty crunchy chips! Will be back😉
