About
Scalable Fish-op is a well-regarded fish and chip shop in Essendon, Victoria, drawing a loyal crowd with its fresh fish, light batter, and a menu that goes well beyond the basics. The potato cakes have developed a strong following among regulars, and the fish burger is another firm favourite. Beyond those signatures, the menu features calamari, chargrilled prawns, chargrilled octopus, a Moreton Bay bug roll, and battered fish and chips done properly, with chips that come out crispy on the outside and fluffy through the middle.
The batter here is a talking point in itself. The oil quality is clearly taken seriously, with fried items coming across as light and airy rather than heavy or greasy. The fish is consistently noted as fresh and tender, and the range of chargrilled options gives the menu a point of difference from most suburban spots.
Dine-in seating is available for those who want to sit down, and the casual atmosphere suits both families and solo diners equally well. Takeaway and delivery are also available. Free parking on-site and on the street makes it easy to get in and out. The shop is family-friendly and opens for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Service times can stretch during busy periods, so ordering ahead during the dinner rush is a smart move.

💖 Came for the potato cake, stayed for the fish and chips.
Marketed as the BEST potato cakes in Melbourne, I reckon you’d be hard pressed to find better.
1️⃣ I found Potato cake batter light, flaky and crispy. Perfectly salted, the serving was massive with an amazing golden colour. If you have room for your stomach, it’s a MUST. ☀️
2️⃣ Similarly, the fish had craggily bits in the batter that the oil latched on to. It made it crunchy and so fun to eat!!
3️⃣ Gotta get some green into your diet. It also helped to cut through the oiliness and heaviness of eating fried food, with a light tangy dressing to match. The portion was enough to split between three people. 🙌
➖ Wasn’t appreciating the chips as much as I should. Steak fries are my least favourite cut because they’re so THICK with fluffy insides.
However, if you’re a steak fry lover these will do it for you. 🍟 Somehow Scalable has got the fluffy insides AND crispy outsides going. It just felt a bit tedious for me to eat after a while.
Dining in, we were treated to an unlimited amount of tomato sauce which my friends loved. Show Scalable some love if you’re in Essendon!! 🍅
Delicious filet-oh burger!
Fish was tender and flaky on the inside with a deliciously crunchy coating. I loved that the fried fish wasn’t greasy and heavy.
The tartar sauce was tangy and creamy pairing well with the fish and cheese.
The house made fries were fresh and yummy.
Good portion sizes as well so definitely worth the price.
Definitely recommend.
Absolutely amazing! This fish and chips shop blew me away! The chips were perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside—just the way they should be. And the fish? So fresh and tender, with the crispiest golden batter. Every bite was pure satisfaction!
But the real surprise? The pineapple fritters. I didn’t expect much, but wow—they were incredible! Crunchy on the outside, juicy and sweet on the inside. I could eat a whole box of these!
Came here by chance, but now I know I’ll be back for sure. Highly recommend!
Chargrilled octopus was totally underwhelming. Tiny serving and overcooked, and not worth $12 per skewer. Fish was great though and good service.
The food is pretty nice overall. The gummy is super fresh and not dry at all, and the potato cakes are always a winner. We also tried the Moreton Bay bug roll, which I’m fairly certain was actually prawn. That was disappointing, especially given it was $18 for a slider sized roll.
I’ve been here twice now, once on a weekday and once on the weekend, and both times there only seemed to be one person working, so wait times were quite long. The person working also wasn’t particularly friendly and came across as quite blunt and didn’t really smile, however she was clearly under the pump and doing everything on her own, so it’s understandable at the same time.
The best fish and chips I’ve ever had in my life, saw the hype about the potato cakes and we had to come in. The potato cakes were just the tip of the iceberg, the gummy shark, octopus and squid were just out of this world. 10/10 to the lovely worker who was handling everyone’s orders plus uber all on her own and still being so kind to us. I will now spend the rest of my life trying to perfect the batter recipe and chimmichuri. Absolute perfection in every way
1. Best fish and chip shop name ever
2. Delicious
3. The oil they use must be high quality, because nothing feels too greasy – it’s light and airy thanks to the the amazing batter
Worth the extra price you pay for the quality. Will be back for sure!
After seeing the hype on social media about this place, I had to check it out.
The chips were delicious, thick and crunchy however we ordered a large and the container was no where near full. The potato cakes are as described, you get a crunch with every bite. However for me, I like a thick potato cake and these were super thin with a very thick and very oily batter (which obviously gives it the crunch). Overall for me this was average, I love fish and chips but everything was fairly oily and not super enjoyable.
