About
Flake Shack is a casual fish and chip shop in Springvale that has built a solid reputation across more than 300 reviews, sitting comfortably in the four-plus star range. Open for lunch and dinner, it draws a loyal crowd from the local area, including families, university students, and solo diners looking for a reliable, affordable feed.
The menu centres on the classics done well. Flake is the headline act here, served in a thin, crispy batter that regulars consistently praise for being light rather than greasy. Chips are thick-cut and golden, a step away from the pale, overly soft kind found at lesser shops. Homemade potato cakes are a favourite worth seeking out, and the souvlaki is frequently mentioned as some of the best in the Springvale area. Onion rings round out the snack options for those who like something a little different.
Both dine-in and takeaway are available, with the shop being fully wheelchair accessible and offering free parking nearby. A kids’ menu makes it a practical choice for families, and the venue accepts reservations, which is handy during the busier dinner service. Payment by card and NFC mobile is accepted. The team is noted for friendly, consistent service and food that comes out fresh rather than sitting under a lamp.
For anyone looking for fish and chips in Springvale, Flake Shack is a strong local option. Phone ahead during dinner peaks to keep wait times short.

Absolutely delicious Flake, potato cakes and crispy golden chips. Onion rings where thick and you could taste the onion, they were a little oilly but still yummy. The best Fish I have had in a long time thin crispy batter not oilly.
The Flake Shack has been on Police Rd for approximately 20 years or so. I popped in the other day because I was craving some fried fish and the store I usually go to (Wanda Catch — which is also good) wasn’t open.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had no less than 10 different types of fish on offer! I grabbed myself a fried Flake and fried Hake and both were great, although slightly too salty so next time I’ll probably ask for no salt. The home made tartare was decent too.
Overall a pretty standard fish and chips and not bad by any stretch. I would say prices are reasonable, a bit more expensive than Wanda Catch I think.
Have always had a great experience here. Best customer service and food is always fresh. Flake is delicious and their souvlaki meat is better than majority around this area. I’m not too sure of other reviews regarding oily food however it’s a fish shop that serves deep fried food, what do you expect? I’ve never been served oily dripping food and we have been coming here for over 20 years, these new owners are living up to the original standards.
Fish was nicely battered and fried. Didn’t taste too heavy and you can tell the oil isn’t old. Chips were great, not the fluoro yellow kind we’re used to having at the OG fish and chip shops. Definitely will be our new local fish and chippy.
I can’t believe I’ve lived in the suburb for so long and am only now trying this place, thanks to a friend’s recommendation! Everything was spot on. The thick cut chips, flakes, and home made potato cakes were perfectly crispy and flaky. This is my new local favourite, and I’ll definitely be back!
Fire fish & chippery.
Felt a bit adventurous for lunch so tried the fish souvlaki – accompanied by tartare sauce per the suggestion of the man behind the counter.
Delicious combination.
$4 extra for chips & a can of drink (decent portion of chips too).
The menu is quite expansive so will meet your needs depending on the craving of the day.
Really friendly staff, the food is always fresh and full of flavour.
Ordered a hamburger with the lot. Paid extra for pineapple. Great burger.
