About
Captains Fish & Chips is a well-regarded fish and chip shop on Kings Road in St Albans, drawing regulars from across Melbourne’s western suburbs. With a strong reputation built across hundreds of visits, it’s easy to see why locals keep coming back.
The menu covers the classics done well. Potato cakes are a firm favourite, the chips are praised for their thickness and seasoning, and the fish arrives fresh with a batter that stays crispy rather than greasy. Family packs are popular at lunch and dinner, and the generous portion sizes mean there’s usually plenty to go around. The shop also caters to younger diners with a kids’ menu, making it a solid choice for family outings. Scallops and fish nuggets get a regular mention too, and the fish fillets are noted for their size.
Service is friendly and attentive, the shop is kept clean, and the food is consistently described as good value. Captains has clearly built a loyal following over the years, with many regulars returning time and again.
Both takeaway and delivery are available, covering lunch and dinner service. Free street parking is close by, so picking up an order is straightforward. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to save some waiting time.

Best Fish n Chips in Melbourne. Entered the store around 7pm nice and clean. Friendly staff Nick was helpful and attentive. We had 5 adults and 1 child and the photos are the leftovers. Nice and fresh not saturated in oil. Highly recommended.
Awful! The fish tasted weird, like it’s been left out since last night! Even the oil for the chips had that stale taste. I’m usually all for fish and chips, but this wasn’t fresh at all! Plus, the prices are way too high, and the staff looked so miserable, not even a smile to be seen. Really disappointed, to be honest! 🙁
Delicious fish and chips found on Kings Road. My wife loves the scallops, whereas the kids are a fan of the nuggets. You can’t beat a potato cake in my opinion.
Like the thickness of the chips, they make a great chip sandwich (if you have never made one, you are missing out!)
Friendly service with a smile
Bought a family pack for lunch and everything was absolutely delicious. Chips and fish were crunchy and well seasoned. Nothing was oily and overall it was great value. 100% will be back
We’ve purchased from this shop previously and both the food and service were fine. However, this time, the potato cakes were barely cooked and they were soggy. My grilled fish didn’t even include a small slice of lemon. The scallops were delicious though.
The service was absolutely terrible. After the staff took the order, they didn’t speak to us another single word until “here’s your order”.
If you want to stay in business, I recommend you pick up your game. Cook the food well and speak to your clients. Build relationships with them to ensure they return.
It does happen that food might not be cooked to perfection. That can be occasionally overlooked if at least the service is great.
In this case it was a big fail for both. Unfortunately, we will seek another fish and chips shop next time.
Friendly staff, good service and not expensive, for food quality I would say that there is no change they keep preparing food like this for many years , I have been customer at this place for many years it’s very good and shop is always clean.
I have been coming here loyally since its was Effies prior to Captains. Are you trying to do too much? $18 for a souvlaki is ok if its good, but this time it was pretty awful, soggy, weird sauce & undercooked lamb. Time to try another local. Unfortunate
Great feed, beautifully cooked, nice size fillets fish bites are hugh.
Highly recommend a try.
