About
The Basin Fish & Chips Shop is a well-rated takeaway spot tucked into The Basin, a quiet outer-eastern suburb of Melbourne. Regulars from across the area make a point of driving past other shops to get here, which says a lot about what the kitchen is putting out. The fish and chips are praised for their taste and value, and the shop has built a reputation as one of the few places left where you genuinely feel you’re getting your money’s worth.
The menu covers the classics done properly. The fish bites are a popular choice for anyone after a lighter option or wanting to mix things up with a few different items. Burgers get a consistent mention too, with regulars noting they’re never greasy or heavy. The whole operation is kept very clean, and the service is friendly and efficient, giving the place the feel of a family-run business that actually cares about the food it serves.
Being takeaway-only keeps things simple and fast. The shop accepts card and mobile payments, and free street parking is right outside, making a quick stop easy. Visitors heading back from the Dandenong Ranges trails have flagged it as a welcome end to the day, and the word-of-mouth from those first-timers has clearly helped build a loyal local following.
For anyone looking for solid fish and chips near The Basin or the surrounding hills, this one is worth putting on the list. Check opening hours before heading over, particularly later in the afternoon.

Fresh and yummy. Great service, well ran and very clean. The fish bites are great if you don’t want a heavy meal or wish to mix it up with other items. Burgers are never fatty. Happy client
Stopped in here on our way back from some hiking trails late in the afternoon and it was some of the best fish and chips my family and I have ever had! Would highly recommend!
Wish I remembered to take a picture to show everyone but I guess I’ll have to next time.
Great taste great value fish and chips. Basically one of the last places that is value for money. Friendly family run business. Definitely doesn’t get enough hype in my books. I drive past 3 other fish and chip shops just to stop in.
After reading the myriad of reviews. I decided to try this shop for my Friday night fish and chips. I had good memories of the tasty breadcrumbs this shop used to coat on their fish, however there are new owners now so that’s clearly no longer, judging from my meal. Regardless. the meal was extremely oily and frankly tasteless from the first bite. I’d rate this as the 2nd worst I’ve ever had next to Wright’s Fish and Chips since the new owner took over there years ago.
I wasn’t expecting much from this place, I checked google reviews.
Only one recent review who wasn’t impressed and all other from previous owner/managers 6months plus. I was very hungry so just ordered fish and chips anyway. I was very impressed!!! Fish was nothing special but cooked well and was delicious and the chips exceptional! Light golden, crispy and soft inside! 🖐️ ⭐️
Atmosphere one to two star😂
I ordered a piece of grilled snapper with chips, and they were ready in just 10 minutes. The portions were generous and the meal was delicious. The finely crumbed fish was very flavorful, and the chips were perfectly cooked. The service, from placing the phone order to collecting the food, was welcoming and friendly.
I highly recommend Basin Fish & Chips!
My first burger with the lot in Melbourne…
Bit different that it had tomato sauce and no beetroot on it but was still good!
Hit them up for gravy which they didn’t have but they left a nice message on my uber bag.
Overall it was an absolutely cracka feed, well done guys!
Grilled flake was a mere 105g cooked, seriously! Shrinkflation at play. Std serve should be 150-200g. Not good. Wont be back.
