About
Dory’s Takeaway has built a solid reputation among locals and visitors alike as one of Ballina’s most reliable fish and chip shops. With well over 600 reviews and a consistent four-plus star rating, the shop is known for light, crispy batter, generously portioned chips, and seafood that regulars describe as genuinely fresh. The menu draws on locally sourced produce, and that commitment to quality shows in the finished plate.
The menu covers the classics and then some. Grilled seafood sits alongside the traditional battered fish and chips, and the calamari draws particular praise for being tender rather than rubbery. Fish cakes are a favourite worth keeping an eye out for, and the tartare sauce has its own following. Sweet potato fries round out the options for those after something a little different, and vegetarian choices mean the whole group is covered. Coffee and ice cream make it easy to linger.
Dory’s is well set up for families. Outdoor seating is available, dogs are welcome outside, and there is a kids’ menu alongside the main offerings. Wheelchair-accessible parking and a flat entrance make the venue straightforward for anyone with mobility needs. The casual atmosphere suits both a quick takeaway run and a sit-down meal, and the shop is open for lunch and dinner daily. Groups and tourists passing through the Northern Rivers regularly make a stop here.

What a disappointment this place was. We were visiting Ballina and looked online to find somewhere that served local seafood and we chose this place as it had a good rating. Ordered online with an estimate of 15 minute pickup time and received indication of this after 15 minutes. Arrived in time to pickup but had to wait at least another 30 minutes for our order!! Drove back to our caravan and even more disappointment. Sweet potato chips were cremated, over salted and inedible. Potato chips were overcooked and very greasy. Squid was not crispy but very greasy and a rip off at $18. Battered Dory fish was ok but very greasy too. I think a corner fish and chip shop would do a better job at a third the price. We were so disgusted with the meal we took the time to respond to there feedback invitation with unsatisfied response. It’s been over 3 days with no response from them. Hence resorting to a public review. We have now left Ballina on our planned journey and have no chance recourse. This situation has left us disgruntled and we definitely wasted our money.
Dory’s Fish and Chips is hands down the best in the area! The fish is always fresh, the batter is perfectly light and crispy, and the chips are cooked just right every single time. The portions are generous, the prices are fair, and the service is consistently warm and welcoming. You can tell they take pride in what they do. Always our go-to spot for an easy, delicious meal. Highly recommend
Just grabbed some takeaway grilled barra, squid, and chips from Dory’s and wow—so good! The fish was super fresh and cooked perfectly, the squid was tender (not chewy at all), and the chips were crunchy. Honestly, one of the best takeaway spots I’ve found in a while. Will definitely be back!
Had a great experience at this little gem when visiting Ballina. We had classic fish n chips done right, battered fish was crispy and cooked well, prices reflect the quality of the food, not your average greasy joint, sweet potato fries were a hit. The new ice cream is a super bonus, my daughter loved it. Def be back with the whole fam and keen to try the sister restaurant – Kelp – next door. Keep it fresh guys, love ya work!! 🤩
The chips are the crispiest, most delicious chips that I have ever had. The tartare sauce is delicious, and the calamari was juicy, crispy and not chewy. I personally love the fish cakes. My family and I had a small feast sitting outdoors in the early evening, such a lovely setting. The service was fantastic, with the staff being extra helpful and kind, even though it was rush hour. All around great experience.
Been coming here for several years as a local. Food is high quality and fresh. It’s more expensive than others in the area, but the quality is truly superior. Alot of attention to detail is put in, and the seafood pack is always cooked perfectly – you can tell they dont just throw it all in at once and hope for the best. I always dine during off peak hours or during the week, and I have never been dissapointed. The young male teenager on the front counter has wonderful customer service, very friendly, professional and goes above and beyond.
Best fried fish basket ever.
Eat it while it is hot or it will taste oily as it cools (like most deep fried food).
You know when it is super-fresh like this is.
The best grilled whiting I have ever had at a fish and chip shop anywhere in Australia. The chips were damn good too. Highly recommend Dory’s, and no, I’m not the owners mum!!😁
