About
The Blue Shop On E K is a well-regarded fish and chip shop in Charlestown, New South Wales, open for brunch, lunch, and dinner across dine-in and takeaway options, with delivery available as well. The menu centres on the classic fish and chips that have earned the shop a loyal following in the area, and the kitchen is notably selective about its fish, avoiding bassa in favour of better-quality options.
The shop operates a dedicated gluten-free cooking area, which regulars who require gluten-free meals rate highly for the light, crispy batter and the care taken to avoid cross-contamination. For families navigating dietary needs, that separate preparation space proves invaluable, and the kids’ menu adds to the family-friendly appeal.
The friendly, welcoming service is a defining feature of any visit. Staff are known for checking in on diners and making the experience feel genuine rather than transactional. The shop has outdoor seating on a grassed area with views toward the ocean, giving it a relaxed atmosphere well suited to a casual meal. Pricing and chip consistency do divide opinion at times, though the freshness and flavour of the fish draw people back regardless.
For anyone searching for fish and chips near Charlestown with genuine gluten-free credentials, this is a solid choice. Check opening hours before heading out, as times may vary across the day.

I had the pleasure of trying this gluten-free fish cocktail, and I must say—it exceeded expectations in every way. Each bite-sized piece was perfectly golden and crisp, boasting a light and airy batter that didn’t feel heavy or greasy. The fish inside was tender, flaky, and fresh, offering a delightful contrast to the crunchy coating.
What impressed me most was how well-executed the gluten-free batter was—it held its structure beautifully and didn’t compromise on flavor or texture. Whether you’re gluten-intolerant or just exploring healthier alternatives, this fish cocktail is a total win. Great as a snack, appetizer, or party platter favorite!
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a delicious and inclusive seafood treat.
Had dinner here and the fish and chips were absolutely perfect fresh, crispy, and full of flavour. The lady serving was so kind and welcoming, she truly made my day. Will definitely be back!
The customer service, the food and just everything is chef’s kiss. Their food is spot on and always hits the spot. Their staff is always friendly and making sure customers are content with their meal. Overall, this is the best restaurant and to go place to eat! 😋
Hidden local gem for fish n chips. No bassa and separate GF cooking area. Five stars for the GF option and it was the best I’ve had. Nice grassed area with view to the ocean 🤩
Used to love the blue shop, but the prices have sky rocketed like crazy. Food was average, and service was okay but unfortunately prices have almost doubled on a couple items comparing the menu from 5 years ago to now.
Chips were nice, but certainly not worth $11 for a medium size.$7:50 normally at belmont, then throw in the 50 cents extra for chicken salt which was never announced when we were asked for plain or chicken salt.It wasn’t until we were asked for $11:50,it’s not the 50 cents that’s the problem it’s the fact we was not told it was extra. Its as if they were ashamed for such a tight fisted operation, hopefully you spend the $11:50 wisely as we won’t be back and neither will any of family or friends who come to stay with us.
Great food, awesome people, fast service, and excellent value
Avoid at all cost, I’ll start with the outside appearance. Weeds growing out of the pavement leading to the front door, two chairs and a table covered in dirt….but wait it gets worse. The minute you enter the greeting is well…frosty at best. Didn’t have to taste the food to know the oil is old but if you don’t become try the food…I dare ya. Lastly don’t take any notice of the business hours because they just open at random times. The previous owners were fantastic and made great food but since the new owners have taken over it’s gone down hill, no it’s plummeted off a cliff.
