About
Out Of The Blue Clovelly is a casual takeaway shop in Coogee that has built a following around its handmade burgers and fresh, sustainably sourced fish. The signature fish burgers attract regulars and first-timers alike, with many noting they are generously stuffed and well balanced. The menu also includes a veggie burger, Sophie’s Famous Vegan Burger, chicken schnitzel, merguez, and classic fish and chips, with the shop’s freshly made daily sauces drawing particular praise. NZ hoki, sustainably sourced, is the fish of choice here.
The shop caters to a wide crowd, from solo diners and university students to families and tourists passing through the Coogee area. Gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options are all available, and the entrance is wheelchair accessible. Dogs are welcome too, which makes the outdoor pickup experience friendlier for pet owners. Free street parking is handy for those driving in.
It is worth keeping in mind that wait times can run long, especially over the busier Thu to Sun trading window. The kitchen puts visible effort into each order, so patience tends to be rewarded. Service is generally friendly, and the quality of ingredients is a consistent point of appreciation among regulars.
Open from Wednesday through Sunday, this Coogee fish and chip shop is a solid pick for anyone after something a step beyond standard takeaway. Check opening hours below before heading in, and consider calling ahead during peak dinner service.

Much like when Prince Eric saw Ariel for the first time, there’s a lovely gesture of love at first sight misaligned with a seafood/see food pun in there that we don’t need to go into.
What we do need to go into is The Blue. Specifically, Out of the Blue, the Legendary Fish and Chipper that had fed East siders for years, and now has gone full blown big fish in the small pond with people coming far and wide for infamous menu items such as the Curry Fish Burger and their potato scallop. I finally got taken there by long time loyalists @yellowbellytv . Now with its booming popularity, the ops is that you’ll wait for a while after placing your order. On a peak night especially but honestly that could be any night for this place.
The menu is the best crossbreeding of Aussie and British fare, hence why it’s so popular in the east with all the UK/EU ex pats based up in these parts. You have the mythic Aussie hamburgers with 1:1:1 beef to bacon to beetroot ratios. Then you mushy peas, schnitty burger, marinated octopus and feta, toms and cucs salad paying homage to the Greek immigrants and their influence of their fishmonger culture here in Aus. Off rip, the fish burger was as hyped – a solid white bread bun, slightly toasted with sauce and dressing from the slaw invading every craggily crevice between the bread and fish batter. There’s a really nice crunch from the salad veg which is all contrasted by the super tender and buttery, flaky whitefish. The mushy peas were really silky and, although some might say an acquired taste, complement the meal as a warm palette cleanser quite well (it feels like a London thing). The marinated octopus was probably the biggest sleeper for me – tender, super well seasoned and hearty, would go perfectly with a potato salad or slice of sourdough.
Everything above is to-go. It’s called Out of the Blue and perhaps the name is fitting as this hearty meal is best enjoyed outside (along the heads of the neighbouring Clovelly Beach is a highly recommended spot) 🎣🌅
Solid old-school burgers in the laid-back beachside suburb of Coogee. We came in craving a good fish burger and it absolutely delivered — stacked with fresh ingredients, but the standout was the fish itself: super fresh, beautifully flaky, and perfectly battered without being doughy. They’ve clearly been doing this for years, and the consistent quality shows.
Best burger in Sydney and probably on the whole of planet Earth, I genuinely believe this, so delicious.
My recommendation is the beef burger, with chili mayo and add pineapple- named the ‘Tony Special’ after a dear friend who created this.
I also love Julian’s famous fish and Remy’s famous chicken.
Make sure you ask for lots of chicken salt!!
Absolutely best fish burger!!
A very stuffed and well balanced one. I’m gonna go again.
Horrible soggy salad half cooked chips and half dry and cold tasteless food spent over $70 here and I will never recommend this to anybody. Everything has to be purchased separately so they can make as much money off you as they can and they don’t provide decent food. don’t believe the good reviews stay away.
By golly. Not good.
For the prices being charged, there’s no excuses here.
After waiting 40 minutes (told 15-20), the chips we received hadn’t spent more than 3 minutes in the fryer. So undercooked, dry and flavourless. Not seasoned at all (despite confirming chicken salt).
Served out on the street with no where to wait. Customers forced to sit on the footpath while waiting 35-45mins per order. Crazy when you’re paying $25-30pp.
Very disappointing.
Won’t try again.
Sooo yummy wow. Huge burgers. Great quality ingredients. Took a while but so worth the wait. It was clear a lot of effort was put into each burger. Their sauces are amazing too. I would recommend
Came to try this place solely based on online and Google reviews. Ordered the NZ Hoki with Small chips, added tartare sauce and garlic mayonnaise. First thing portions are huge. For a small order of chips they were quite generous. Flavour wise, definitely had better. Was quite disappointed really.
Maybe I should have tried their fish burgers instead?
