About
The Avenue Takeaway has built a solid reputation in Hamilton South as a no-fuss fish and chip shop that does the classics properly. Hand-cut chips are a clear point of pride here, soft on the inside and full of flavour, and regulars have been coming back for them for years. The gravy draws consistent praise too, rich and satisfying in the way only a traditional takeaway can pull off.
The menu leans into variety and value, offering old-school fish and chips alongside burgers, onion rings, and a kids’ menu that makes it a practical choice for families. Sophie’s Special is a standout that regulars mention by name, reportedly generous in size. The selection is broad enough that most people find something to like, and the hand-cut chips alone give the shop a point of difference from the chain alternatives nearby.
Service is part of the appeal. The staff are known for being genuinely warm and attentive, the kind of unhurried, friendly manner that keeps people loyal. Solo diners, university students, and families from around Newcastle all find their way here, and the word-of-mouth recommendation from those who stumble across it while visiting the area speaks to how well the shop delivers on its promise.
The Avenue Takeaway is a takeaway-only venue, so there’s no dine-in seating on site. Card and NFC payments are accepted, and free parking is available nearby. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to keep waiting time down.

The gravy is delicious 😋 I have bought here for a long time . The chips are so soft and taste like the best chips in the world 🌎.The servers are so kind they gave my granddaughter lollies and said she lit up the whole store , she always leaves with a smile on her face. YOU ARE THE BEST STORE EVER!!!!!!!!!! I hope your store goes down though generations and more people can experience this store
Traditional takeaway store, when you want old school fish and chips and burgers this is the place to go. Hand cut chips and a huge selection. Everything is amazingly delicious, highly recommended. The Sophie’s special is also massive, generous portions and great prices. The staff are friendly, and the service is reasonably fast as well.
The fish and chips here were so delicious! Had so much flavour, everything was fresh and thee service was amazing. The chips are hand cut and you can tell. A great little local place that I’m glad we found whilst in Newcastle. I would definitely recommend getting your fish and chips from here. 🙂
Genuinely lovely service, humble and generous people work here and i can not praise that enough! If you like a salty onion ring or a menu that is absolutely about value and variety stop in down at the Avenue, i did and its a pleasant memory already!
Gave this little takeaway shop a try for the first time and wow! 🤩 As you first walk in, a wave of nostalgia comes over you with that amazing smell of old school takeaway shops, the staff were super friendly and enjoyed having a nice little chat while my food was cooking which was just lovely. I ordered $5 of chips and a Pluto pup and it tasted sensational! Pluto pup was lovely and crisp on the outside and wasn’t just covered in thick batter, the chips were perfectly salted and crispy and didn’t taste at all floury when they started to get cold and they were crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle! 100000000/10 highly recommend and we will absolutely be coming back!
Went in on a very busy Sunday late afternoon and knew there would be a wait although not told how long. It was prepared and picked up 45 mins after ordering . The friendly service was well received however when home the fish was eatable, a little dry ( ordered barramundi ) think it was shark , the chips were fried to a crisp as was the rest of the order. Think things may have been handled better if at least one more staff member was involved with the cooking as distraction led to the overcooking unfortunately. . I will give them another try when not so busy .
Proper chips (fries) cut onsite, not frozen as in most places. Run by mother and daughter. Like all places hard to get staff due to NDIS. As they are very inexpensive, often overrun by orders. Best egg and bacon burger in town. Well, respected by our neighborhood. Be nice as we do not want to lose them.
What a great dinner ….. now our family favourite. Old school family run fish & chips shop. You cannot beat it. They get busy because they are so good. Always our ‘go to’ dinner.
