About
Glebe Takeaway is a well-known fish and chip shop serving The Junction in Newcastle, New South Wales, drawing a loyal crowd of regulars, university students, and families looking for a solid, no-fuss meal. The shop runs a takeaway-only operation, open across lunch and dinner with brunch service available as well. Free street parking makes it easy to duck in without the hassle.
The menu leans into the classics that keep people coming back. Crumbed fish is a firm favourite among regulars, praised for its texture and flavour, and the chips are consistently well-received. Potato cakes (or scallops, as they’re known in these parts) are another popular order. The cheeseburger also gets a mention for being satisfying without feeling heavy. It’s the kind of spread that brings a nostalgic feel to the whole experience, reminiscent of the old-school takeaway shops many Australians grew up with.
The venue carries decent reviews across a solid number of visits, and the food quality is generally considered good value for the area. Service has been noted as variable on occasion, so phone-ahead orders during busy periods can help things run more smoothly. The shop is family-friendly and suits a wide range of diners, from solo lunch visits to a casual feed with the kids.

This place will take you back to 1990. You get everything you want from here that reminds you of the old school chicken shop down the road that you’d go to as a kid. I opted for the crumbed fish and chips with extra potato scallops. I felt nostalgic eating it. The fish was a bit overdone, but I have no complaints – it all hit the spot.
The service was prompt and very friendly – the staff are great.
Nice enough staff to order and pay. Didn’t have much of a wait on the order.
Fish cocktails ok ,
chips over cooked,
sadly calamari tasted like garlic(possibly something in the house coating) tastes very bad
Idk what’s going on with the gravy – looks bad tastes worse
I have been coming to Glebe takeaway for about a year. The crumbed fish is amazing and the cheeseburger is so satisfying without being greasy. Love the chips. They just do everything really well. The best fish and chip shop in Newy.
You’ll get a big range of choices. You’ll get decent tasting food. You’ll get fair prices. You’ll get somewhere outside to sit and eat. What you won’t get is friendly service. It would be nice if they understand the importance of politeness and friendliness to customers.
The food was absolutely unreal. Customer service could have a little bit of a work The lady who served us just didn’t seem very happy or enthusiastic to be working the registers She either needs to retire or go find another career choice
I rarely leave negative reviews, but the service here was honestly shocking. The lady behind the counter was disgustingly rude from the moment I ordered – no greeting, no manners, and an attitude that made it feel like I was an inconvenience for simply being there. Zero customer service skills and completely unprofessional.
This place does decent food, but if you wondered why the local chippie has disappeared, they’ll remind you. No direct ordering, no uber, no delivery, rude service if they decide to answer the phone; but if you want to drive out and wait 20 minutes for some fish and chips they’re a great shout 🤙🏻
Got some tasty chippies a few weeks ago so came back for fish and chips – chips still good and generous portion, fish was good size and not oily by the fish itself was really dry and over cooked. Ate it as we were hungry but was not good.
