About
The Bigger Fish Shop is a well-regarded fish and chip shop in North Ryde, serving the local community with dine-in, takeaway, and delivery options. With free parking and full wheelchair access, it’s a practical choice for families, and the casual outdoor seating adds a relaxed feel to the experience.
The menu leans into classic Australian fish-and-chip shop territory. Regulars praise the battered fish as good-value and unpretentious, and the grilled fish and chips draws its own loyal following for consistent quality and seasoning. The dim sim is something of a signature here, with some locals describing it as the real old-fashioned kind that’s become harder to find. Beyond the core menu, the shop also offers burgers, fish cocktails, and vegetarian options, alongside a salad bar for those after something lighter. Catering is available for larger orders.
Service tends to be friendly and attentive. One notable pattern from regulars is the shop’s willingness to remake orders fresh when delivery times run long, which has built a fair bit of goodwill. Opinions on consistency do vary, particularly when staffing changes, so ordering during peak times when the kitchen is in full swing tends to produce the best results.
For anyone in the North Ryde area looking for straightforward, affordable fish and chips with a nostalgic edge, The Bigger Fish Shop is worth checking out. Phone ahead for larger or catered orders.

The first time I had delivery and the delivery took so long that they remade my food fresh batch. You guys are awesome.
From there I’ve been ordering from this restaurant with both delivery and pick up.
The battered fish and the grilled fish are always cooked perfectly, salted beautifully and especially the potato scallops.
Love love love this place.
When the new owner took over the shop, the food was amazing at this place. The other day I went there expecting the same fish and chips that I have always got at this place previously. The owner was not there at the time and a few young guys were running the shop. Chips were soggy and the fish had gotten cold as they had put too many pieces of fish in the fryer for quite a number of orders without enough staff to serve them, and my fish and chips were sitting there behind a long queue of orders getting cold. Not sure if the chips were cooked for long enough, or if it was sitting out for too long,
as they were soggy.
I remember the chips used to be yellow & crispy, and the fried fish was always hot and crispy. Sadly, I didn’t get that experience. Please start serving your food the same way it was when you took over the shop. It used to be so pleasant eating here.
Been here before on a Sunday food was amazing. Came twice on a random tuesday night, wasn’t great this time food was horrible ended up throwing it away and left without dinner. Fish was so rubbery and hard! could literally hit it with my fork and it wouldn’t even move lol. Also tastes so fishy this time, such a let down
One of Sydney’s best fish shops is in Ryde! Who would have thought? Good old fashioned fish and chips for very reasonable price in 2025 and the dim sim is the same one you used to get on the beach in the 80’s. 👍🏼Thanks guys 🤙🏼
I had a very disappointing experience at The Bigger Fish in Ryde.
The staff and the welcome were friendly, which is the only positive point.
Unfortunately, the food was extremely greasy, to the point where it felt unsafe to eat. The cleanliness was also very questionable, especially considering this is a place serving fried food.
A few hours after eating there, I had strong stomach pains. It’s important to note that this was the only thing I had eaten that day, which makes the situation quite concerning.
The oil used for cooking clearly needs to be changed old oil is not only bad for taste but can also be dangerous for health.
Good service cannot make up for poor food quality and hygiene issues. I would not recommend eating here unless serious improvements are made.
This was one of the worst fish and chips experiences I’ve had.
The fish was extremely greasy and completely tasteless, which is unacceptable for a place specializing in fried fish.
The chips were soggy and undercooked, clearly showing a lack of control over oil temperature and cooking time. For good-quality frying, these basics should be mastered, otherwise the result is oily, soft, and unpleasant.
On top of that, the staff member with a beard was cold and unpleasant, which made the experience even worse.
Overall, poor food quality and bad service.
I won’t be coming back.
great value for money – the grilled fish and chips is my dad’s favourite – always high quality fish well cooked great seasoning and friendly and helpful staff
Ordered a burger, fish cocktails and chips. Everything was very good. Would def recommend this place for a visit.
