About
Flying Fish & Chips sits inside The Star’s food court in Pyrmont, offering something a little different from a traditional fish and chip shop. The menu spans classic battered fish and chips through to sushi, sashimi, poke bowls, and poached fish, making it a solid option for groups where not everyone is after the same thing. Families are well catered for, with a kids’ menu available, and the venue is wheelchair accessible.
The miso salmon poke bowl draws plenty of praise, with the sushi rice standing out as notably well seasoned and carefully prepared. Salmon dishes more broadly are a reliable choice here. The battered fish and chips have been described by regulars as golden and crunchy, with well-seasoned chips. Beer, wine, and cocktails are available alongside the food, and a pre-theatre special is offered for those visiting before an evening at The Star.
It is worth noting that some visitors have found the battered fish inconsistent, with concerns around overcooking and the occasional bone in fillets. Portion sizes can vary. The service, however, is generally quick, which suits the food court setting.
Both dine-in and takeaway are available, and the venue accepts reservations. Open seven days, with slightly extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Phone ahead during the dinner rush if you have your heart set on a specific dish.

Had the Salmon Teriyaki. Nice bit of Salmon w pickled ginger rice & Veges. Long green beans not my favourite vegetable at least all Veges were crunchy. Sushi packs from $10 Wraps from $9.50. Alcoholic beverages available too
In The Star’s food court with plenty of seafood options from fresh oysters, prawns to grilled or fried seafood, chips & burgers. The fish and chips are crispy & chips had a nice seasoning & were both golden, crunchy & tasty. The criapy fish burger was the favourite with a lovely tartare, soft buns & juicy crispy fish. The tuna poke was also very tasty although fresh cucumber slices would have been better then pickled. Staff are helpful but can be a little short but understandable given how busy it gets. They also serve alcohol which is a bit of a treat for a foodcourt!
Always enjoy a seafood dish here, from fresh sushi to servings of salmon, it’s premium yet economical. The service is great and the location is within the food court area of a leading entertainment precinct. If you need food to prep you for a night in the big house, then this is it! 😉
Recommend the fisherman’s basket, the oyster tray and the spicy salmon sushi 🙂
The seafood platter for two for $75 was just the right amount of food for me, my wife and my daughter to share. Sashimi and the oysters were fresh and the calamari was so delicious and soft. Grilled Barramundi wasnt too dry and had crispy skin, yum. Chips were plentyful too.
They also give discount if you hold the casino rewards program card.
Will be back again.
I recently tried Flying Fish and Chips and found the experience to be quite average. The shop has a straightforward, no-frills vibe, which suits its focus on delivering classic fish and chips.
The food was decent, with the fish being freshly cooked and lightly battered. The chips were crispy on the outside but a bit soggy on the inside, which was a bit disappointing. The portion sizes were generous, but the meal could have used a bit more seasoning or flavor.
Service was prompt and friendly, but there were some minor delays during peak hours. The cleanliness of the establishment was acceptable, though the dining area could use a little more upkeep.
Overall, Flying Fish and Chips offers a solid, if unremarkable, fish and chips experience. It’s a reliable option if you’re in the mood for a classic meal, but there’s room for improvement in terms of food quality and consistency.
Beyond average. I ordered the pre-theatre special that comes with 2 pieces of fried calamari rings, 2 pieces of fish, chips and lettuce leaves. The fish and chips were over-fried to the point of being way to crispy and not in a good way. The ‘salad’ was a bunch of mixed leaves with no dressing and one stingy lemon wedge. Even for $21 this is not worth it. Try another option.
The food was awful, I ordered the cheese burger and the bread was extremely doughy, the meat was over cooked and the price was way too high. I would prefer Maccas or Hungry Jacks to this slop. My friends fish fillet had multiple bones in it which stabbed into his mouth and the portion sizes were small compared to price and taste, but frankly I wouldn’t want a bigger portion of what I just ate because of how terrible it tasted. The fries were fine but how can you mess up fries. The food is obviously frozen but I don’t know how you can stuff up THAT bad.
The miso salmon poke bowl was one of the best poke bowls I’ve had.
The sushi rice was top quality. Perfectly cooked and seasoned with sweet sushi vinegar. I’m usually not a big rice person but the rice was delicious just by itself.
The toppings of cut up miso salmon, pickles, edamame and soft buttery avocado was excellent.
Only downside is that they were a bit stingy with the salmon.
The fish tacos were solid. Though the size of the fish in one of the tacos was noticeably bigger than the other. This special meal came with a glass bottle of coke zero.
The mixed sashimi of kingfish, tuna and salmon was ok. Quality was decent but it had been sitting in room temperature for too long. The kingfish in particular was a bit stringy and noticeably room temperature. Appreciate it is winter but please keep your sashimi chilled.
Service was friendly.
Plenty of seating.
