About
Redfern Fish & Chips has built a solid reputation as one of the better fish and chip shops in the Redfern area, drawing a loyal crowd of locals and visitors alike across its lunch and dinner service. With well over four hundred reviews and a strong four-plus star standing, it’s the kind of place that earns repeat visits.
One of the shop’s notable features is the level of choice on offer. Diners can select from a range of seafood including barramundi, hake, salmon, dory, prawns, and calamari, then choose how it’s cooked: beer batter, crumb, or grilled. That flexibility suits a wide range of tastes and keeps the menu feeling fresh. The calamari draws regular praise, with thick rings and a satisfying texture that regulars come back for. The chips are generously sized, and the overall pricing is considered fair for the quality.
The shop is dine-in and takeaway friendly, with outdoor seating available for those who prefer to eat outside. Dogs are welcome, and a kids’ menu makes it a practical stop for families. Delivery is also available, including no-contact delivery for those ordering from home. The atmosphere is casual and unhurried, and the owner and staff are known for being genuinely welcoming. There’s also decent coffee on offer, which adds a handy option for the lunch crowd.
For anyone searching for fish and chips in New South Wales’ inner south, this Redfern spot is a solid pick. Phone ahead during the dinner rush if you’re after a quicker wait.

Thoroughly enjoyed my take out here. The owner of the store is super friendly and nice, wanted to give him a shout-out. Love the calamari, was thick and had fantastic texture to it. The fish was good, maybe a little over cooked for my liking (especially the salmon). The other highlights were the potato cake and the Greek salad; highly recommend that as a side but wished it was packaged by itself and not with the fish & chips.
Best fish and chips around the Redfern area. You can choose the type of seafood (Barramundi, Hake, Salmon, Dory, prawn, calamari, etc.) and how to cook it (beer batter, crumb or grill); all are good. Big-cut fried calamari and crumbed Hake is my favorite. Reasonable price, friendly staff and quick service. I always eat here every week. Highly recommend.
My partner and I loved this Aussie fish and chip shop! I had the Calamari rings and hot chips with salad. Very fresh and big Calamari rings. The food came in a takeaway box which was convenient.
My partner and I was very hungry this morning and so he got the Breakky burger and was full after. Great place to go have lunch or Breakfast! Highly reccomend and friendly service.
The food was amazing, the staff were friendly and the atmosphere was quiet and pleasant. Reasonably priced, well located, a perfect spot for breakfast and lunch.
Great tasting coffee. I liked my espresso so much I ordered a flat white soon after and it was delicious too. They also have fun desserts and tasty meals. Service has been friendly and prompt everytime I’ve been there!
The portions are huge! For $30, we got 6 potato scollaps and large chips for delivery, and we were not expecting the size! The chip box wouldn’t shut fully it was that packed full. And the scallops are massive, Everything was cooked well. The only complaint was that it was rather undersalted, but overall, delicious and great value!
This depressing fish and chip shop is right next door to the Redfern hotel.
It has some of the worst fish and chips.
The chips have a highlighter yellow colour and are pretty boring, but even worse, my mate got given his chips with no salt!!! He ended up leaving them because with salt, they are barely edible.
Fish was pretty bad, Basa always has a sliminess I dont like. I felt sure this was advertised as N.Z. Hake and they pulled a swifty. That might work in the short term but you lose out in reviews. The batter was alright, but it’s a low bar at this point.
Crumbed calamari I had high hopes for as they are $2.30 each from memory, but alas mass produced so flavourless!
Friend had a burger, which was OK, but on one of those buns with flour still on outside, and he would have preferred simple bun with sesame seeds.
Disappointed!!!! and will never return….thats rare that I say that.
Randomly had a fish and chips craving so I decided to check this place out, getting some fish and chips for $16.50. The portion size was very big with a ton of chips and big slab of fish.
The fish was good with super crispy batter and flaky meat inside ! However, the chips weren’t that great. They were too thick and many of them were not crispy at all, even slightly saggy. The amount of tartare sauce compared to the amount of food is quite pitiful. Still, this was sufficient enough to satisfy my craving. Overall I’d give it a 5 or 6 out of 10.
Unassuming but amazing. I like simple fish and chips with good batter. This little shop delivers on crunchy batter and really nice chips that still taste good when reheated
