About
Summer Hill Fish + Chips has built a solid reputation in the inner west, drawing regulars who come back for the battered barramundi with chips. The fish is known for its crispy golden coat and soft, fresh flesh inside, and the chips are just as good, cooked to that satisfying crunch that keeps people coming back. Potato scallops also get a regular mention, done the old-fashioned way that chip shop fans appreciate.
The shop handles lunch and dinner service with both takeaway and delivery available. Peak times, particularly Friday nights, can see a wait of around twenty to thirty minutes for a full order, though many regulars consider it well worth it. Staff are consistently described as friendly and welcoming, which adds to the relaxed, neighbourhood feel of the place.
The Summer Hill fish and chip shop is wheelchair accessible with free street parking nearby, making it easy to reach for most visitors. Hamburgers round out the menu for anyone not in the mood for seafood, and the general quality across the board keeps the shop well-rated among Sydney’s inner west options.
Phone ahead during busy periods to keep your wait time down.

Surprisingly good fish and chips! Popular spot so be prepared for a twenty to thirty minute wait for your order in peak times. Menu log available.
Fantastic old fashioned fish and chips. Totally worth the wait. Perfection can’t be rushed. Beautiful and friendly staff. Everything cooked perfectly. I can’t talk it up enough. Crispy and perfect chips, potato scollops perfectly cooked. Fresh fish.
Have been going for as long as I remember and was going here before the tragic fire. Food is amazing and wait time on a typical Friday night is on 10-15
Mins (my family has a big order).
Enjoyed the battered fish burger. It was light, crispy and well sized that I was eating fish with each bite to the end of the bun. Bun was nicely toasted as well. Would be keen to return and try a proper fish and chips and some of their sides like the battered scallop. Service was friendly and welcoming!
Great sea food, fresh, kind staff. Well prepared. Best fish shop in Sydney. Lucky we have them here in Ashfield.
Great seafood and Hamburgers 🍔 very clean and friendly staff highly recommended 👌
The most amazingly fresh salad came with this tasty good portioned, chunky burramundi. I was surprised at how fresh the salad leaves and tomato was!! I did a takeaway so can’t comment on shop atmosphere Thank you
I ordered a fish cocktail here on Friday 06/02/26, and honestly, I wish I’d walked straight back out.
While waiting, I watched food handling that was nothing short of disgusting. Frozen garlic prawn skewers went into the microwave, then straight onto the grill. The same thing happened with dim sums. That’s not cooking — that’s abuse. You don’t microwave seafood and then pretend grilling it fixes the damage. It doesn’t. It just makes it rubbery, dry, and dangerous.
The prep areas looked neglected, and I saw no proper hand hygiene. No care. No pride. No standards. I’ve seen bad practices before, but with seafood this is a whole different level of unacceptable. Seafood demands precision and cleanliness — this was chaos.
This place felt like a Kitchen Nightmares episode waiting to happen. Shortcuts everywhere, hygiene treated like an optional extra, and frozen products being tortured into submission and sold as food.
I lost my appetite standing there. I wouldn’t trust this kitchen, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone else do either.
This is a strong avoid. Shut it down, deep clean everything, retrain the staff, and start again — because right now this isn’t a fish and chip shop… it’s a health warning with a fryer.
