About
NT Local Fish and Chips sits in Leanyer, Northern Territory, offering dine-in seating, takeaway, and delivery to the local area. The menu leans into Territory produce, with the barramundi burger as the signature dish, homemade potato cakes, and a selection of fresh local barra prepared to order.
The shop has its supporters. Regulars note that the barramundi can arrive with genuinely crispy batter, and the homemade potato cakes are a point of difference in a region where they have largely disappeared from chip shop menus. The barramundi burger draws particular praise from those who appreciate locally sourced fish.
That said, the reviews are mixed enough to set expectations honestly. Recurring concerns include chips arriving undercooked, fish that can turn out overcooked or watery on less consistent days, questions around oil quality, and portion sizes that some find difficult to justify at the price. Service speed has also drawn comment, particularly during quieter periods when wait times have still stretched out.
The venue is family friendly with wheelchair access and free parking, and it accepts card payments and reservations. For Leanyer residents wanting fish and chips delivered without leaving home, it remains a local option. Check current hours before visiting.

34 minutes to cook 4 slices of bacon and 8 eggs for 4 x bacon burgers!
No customers there at 11.54 yet it still took this long.
And i did not ask for salad at all – that was the blt option. I clearly asked for 4 x bacon burgers.
Funnily enough an uber order cam and got served before i did in the 34 minute time frame.
Slow slow slow workers that work with no sense of urgency.
Lettuce (that i did not ask for) was brown.
One small bit of bacon on a bacon burger !!!!
And one slice of tomato (again – that i didnt ask for) on a tip top burger roll.
The bacon and tomato slice combined did not take up half of the surface area of the the bread roll.
I WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF ASKING FOR A BROWN LETTUCE ROLL!!
This is sad and very disappointing !! If I had known the crumbs prawns are like the ones we can buy from woollies I would have just brought a bag and cooked them n the air fryer and not paid $3 each ! The fish and chip itself was not worth it !
To be fair and honest, if that’s at all possible in today’s world.
Rule 101 in any Fish n Chippery is use CLEAN oil.
It’s a must if you want to retain customers and attract more.
The portion of Threadfin Salmon was small with the over cooked batter making up the bulk of the serving.
The serving of fish n chips was adequate but the 2 fish servings came from a box of frozen product that was not given credit to on the menu.
So no telling what it was or where it was from.
I purchased a salad as well that I actually bought home so I could share it with dinner tonight.
Arguably the most expensive takeaway salad I’ve purchased in Darwin.
As a retired Chef of 30+ years in the industry, I’m disappointed, dissatisfied and frankly disillusioned that we have not progressed far in the 23 years I’ve been here in the Territory.
We just don’t seem to get the basics right when it comes to one of the most important commodities….
Take Away Food!
Being a visitor to Darwin, I am loving the Barramundi, but not from this place. It was awful, nothing like I have had elsewhere. The fish was a batter parcel, half empty and of what fish was there, half was dark in colour. The serving size not up to par and food was generally over oily. In one word…yuk.
Go to Finigans instead.
The flavour of the curries is good. The amount you get for what you pay is almost criminal in my opinion. Large containers filled halfway with mostly juice and rice…a negligible amount of meat. Never again.
I think I’m being generous giving two stars.Ordered crumbed fish ,it was watery and tasteless and the chips weren’t fully cooked.I hope it improves however it’ll be sometime before I return …if at all.
Best barra burger this side of the galaxy.
Homemade potato cakes are few and far between in chip shops these days but this shop is keeping it real.
Fresh local barra covered in a perfect crispy batter even after a 15 minute travel speaks for itself.
Ten thumbs up ✅
Absolutely disgusting serving raw food. Ordered a chicken alfredo. Stone cold on inside and raw
