About
Surf n Thai brings something a little different to Cairns City, combining a fish and chip shop with a Thai takeaway menu under one roof. Located in the Cairns Central food court, it’s a convenient spot for anyone after a quick, satisfying meal at lunch or dinner, with dine-in and takeaway both available.
The locally caught Spanish mackerel is the clear star of the seafood side of the menu, served crumbed or battered and praised for its light, grease-free finish. Hand-cut potato scallops are another highlight, described as crispy without being heavy. Fish and prawns round out the seafood selection, all prepared with what regulars note is a notably clean, fresh flavour. The Thai side of the menu offers quick bites and assorted plates, with friendly, attentive staff keeping wait times short even during busy service periods.
The food court setting means turnover is high and freshness is generally reliable, though the Thai offerings lean toward a milder flavour profile suited to a broad local palate. For those after straightforward, well-cooked fish and chips in Cairns, the Spanish mackerel alone makes it worth seeking out.
The venue is family friendly, wheelchair accessible, and accepts card and mobile payments. Street parking is available nearby. Check current opening hours before visiting.

I love the deep fried wontons and in told the fish is fabulous. This place is a Thai takeaway and fish and chip place. Super friendly ladies always working so hard to not let the customer wait.very long before being served. Cairns Central has a good selection of takeaway place here as a whole.
Best crumbed locally caught Spanish mackerel and hand cut potato scallop I’ve ever eaten. Both were light and crispy with no grease. Delicious with a salad and lemon wedge.
Very, very disappointed. My husband and I weren’t able to eat our fish and chips. Fish lacked flavour and left a bitter after-taste. Luke warm and chips were very dry. Don’t know how long they had been sitting in the warmer. The lady who served us seemed to rush us through.
Food court in Central Mall
Good fresh condition with reassuring high turnover
Good value and quick service
I found it pleasant but missing much authentic flavour as its a bit flavour-dumbed down for the local market taste perhaps
The food is nuce. We got a box that had 4 types of assorted meats & sides available in their window.
Best fish and prawns I’ve ever eaten . Local Spanish Mackerel, crumbed or battered, no greasiness or oil taste . Scrumptious with a salad .
Will definitely try their Thai food and other salads but can’t help but buy the fish . Yum 🤤
The Potato Scallops are the best I’ve ever had! I don’t eat them anywhere else now!
I am pretty sure the chicken was off. 😞 I had to throw my meal out.
