About
Captain Cooks Fish & Chips is a well-rated fish and chip shop in Cairns North, popular with locals and visitors alike. The menu leans into the region’s tropical catches, with coral trout, mackerel, and Spanish mackerel all on offer alongside the usual takeaway favourites. Grilled coral trout is the signature, and it draws repeat customers who make a point of stopping in each time they’re in Cairns.
Portions are generous across the board. The chips come out hot and crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, and serves are large enough that even a small size has been known to feed two. The crumbed fish gets consistently strong marks, with the light, crunchy coating and fresh flesh doing most of the talking. Calamari is another highlight, described by regulars as buttery and real rather than the rubbery frozen kind. Crumbed mackerel also draws praise, with the light crumb and fresh fish making it a solid choice.
Beyond the fish, the menu includes salads, vegetarian options, and a dedicated kids’ menu, making it a practical choice for families. Family packs are available for those feeding a group. Dine-in and takeaway are both catered for, with outdoor seating on site. Free parking is available both on-site and on the street, and dogs are welcome.
The building is modest and sits on a main road rather than a scenic strip, but the focus here is squarely on the food. Phone ahead during busy dinner periods to keep wait times short.

Holy hell-just ordered a great late dinner leaving me satisfied and satiated. Fresh, delicious and definitely not left hungry. Ordered a crumbed fish burger & a serve of chips (was the small size I think which could easily serve 2 people) rang up & ordered and was ready in 10mins. I usually expect $20+ for a fish burger & chips but was pleasantly surprised when the total was $15! Huge burger & chips- great value! Crumbed fish was 20/10 yum, 2 decent sized pieces (or maybe 1 big size cut in half),cooked wonderfully & succulent with really nice crunchy crumb. Highlight was the fish- Will definitely be back when in Cairns next. Thankyou for a great meal 😃
Delicious coral trout and chips and nice big serving. Batter not how I like it, but fish was perfect.
Calamari was ok and nice, big serving.
This place is a must for coral trout and calamari I have been here each time I’m in cairns and it’s exceptional. The chips are not much chop but the crumbed trout is fantastic and the calamari is real and tasted buttery like it should
Very nice fish and chips. Have the option of different types of fish like coral trout and Spanish mackerel. Good price and was pretty quick
Large chips isn’t all that large..fish wasn’t worth the price, could’ve went to Cairns Central shopping centre and got my moneys worth. Certainly not the same as the previous owners.
Some of the best takeaway fish and chips! You wouldn’t think so because it is on a main road not the beach and the build is very run down. But you’re not there to admire the atmosphere, you’re there to eat a good meal and it delivered. Yum!
Tasty food, quick friendly service. Fish portions are nice and big and perfectly cooked, good sized portions of chips which were nice and crunchy but soft in the middle tasty salads that were nice and fresh.
Absolutely top‑notch crumbed mackerel and chips — easily some of the best I’ve had in Cairns. The fish was fresh, perfectly cooked with a light, crunchy crumb, and the chips were spot on: hot, crisp and generous. Add in a bit of genuine local banter and entertainment while you wait and it just rounds out the experience. No fuss, no pretence — just great food, good value, and proper Far North Queensland hospitality. I’ll definitely be back.
