About
Mount Peter Foodstore & Take Away is a well-regarded fish and chip shop serving the Edmonton and broader Cairns community, covering everything from a quick takeaway lunch to a relaxed sit-down dinner. The venue is family-friendly, with outdoor seating, kerbside pickup, free on-site parking, and wheelchair accessibility making it easy for all kinds of visitors to drop in. Dogs are welcome inside and out, and the casual atmosphere extends to live music and sport viewing on occasion.
The menu is anchored by fresh line-caught Spanish mackerel, served golden battered, crispy crumbed, or grilled to order. Calamari rings, sea scallops, and a family pack of fish and chips round out the seafood side, while a fish burger and steak burger cover the heartier options. Regulars speak highly of the potato cakes, noting the batter is consistently crispy, and the chips come out golden and well cooked. The fish itself earns praise for being fresh and flaky with clean flavour, a detail that visitors travelling through Cairns have also picked up on.
Breakfast and brunch are also on the menu, which is less common for a fish and chip shop and a pleasant bonus for early risers. Vegetarian options, small plates, and a kids’ menu mean the whole family is catered for across the day. With a solid four-plus star reputation built on nearly two hundred reviews, it’s a place the Edmonton community returns to regularly.

Just snagged these amazing potato cakes (scallops) and chips, and let me tell you, my taste buds were dancing! As someone who prides themselves on being a connoisseur of all things crispy and delicious, I was blown away. These beauties were homemade, with perfect potato slices about 10mm thick, encased in a batter so crispy it sang when I bit into it.
The batter held its crunch while absorbing just enough oil to make the salt dissolve perfectly on the tongue. Each bite was a symphony of texture and flavor, leaving me in a state of pure culinary bliss.
Huge shoutout to the legends at Mt Peter Road fish and chips! You’ve taken my taste buds on a rollercoaster of joy and left me eagerly anticipating my next visit. Bravo, folks, bravo!
I stopped by this fish and chip place for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised! Even though they’re best known for fish and chips, their breakfast menu was spot on. I had toast with bacon and eggs, which were cooked perfectly and served fresh. The customer service was excellent—friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The ambiance was warm and inviting, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal. Another big plus was the free parking, which made the visit hassle-free. Overall, a great experience and I’d happily come back.
I’ve been coming to Mt Peter Takeaway regularly and it always delivers. Their fish & chips are seriously top-notch: the fish is fresh and flaky, the batter has a nice crunch, and the chips are golden and well cooked. Every time I get a burger it’s juicy and satisfying, and their portions are generous for the price.
I visited Mount Peter Foodstore during my trip to Cairns and it was such a great experience! A few locals suggested this place, and I’m glad I listened. The fish was absolutely delicious – fresh, perfectly cooked, and with no smell at all, which makes it stand out compared to other shops I’ve tried. The prices are also very affordable, making it a must-visit spot for anyone in the area. Highly recommended!
Just saw you had a web page to order in advance. I was thinking chicken burger for lunch Friday as I work in the area. I also like seafood sticks. Way over priced at $4. I kept scrolling chiko roll and spring roll spelt as role. Unless there pretending to be a chiko roll and spring roll. Also overly priced. Burgers, fish etc pricing seems reasonable. Need to look at the add ons
This used to be my go to for fish and chips but since the new owners took over the place is dirty. My thongs were literally sticking to the floor. Outside looked like it hasn’t been cleaned in a long time. The man serving me seemed to have a distaste for women by the way I was spoken to / ignored. Food was average and portion sizes have certainly reduced. Have learnt my lesson and will not be going back to Mt Peter.
Mount Peter Takeaway consistently delivers high-quality, fresh food with excellent customer service. The team maintains fast turnaround times, clean presentation, and reliable order accuracy. Their online ordering and delivery options add convenience, making them a standout choice for locals seeking great value and dependable service
This place is absolutely filthy! Taking your life into your hands stopping here. Dead gheckos and flies everywhere. Gross. 1st and last time I would be going here. Walked in and walked out. If the front of the store is like that you can only imagine the back where they cook and store food!
