About
Nick’s Bowen Road Fish Bar is a popular fish and chip shop serving Rosslea and the broader Townsville area, with a strong reputation built on quality fish, generous portions, and friendly service. The menu leans into local favourites, with barramundi, mackerel, and calamari regularly drawing praise from regulars and first-timers alike.
The batter is a highlight here. Light and crispy rather than heavy or greasy, it lets the freshness of the fish come through, and the chips are cooked to order, arriving hot and in serve sizes that won’t leave anyone disappointed. Potato scallops are also on the menu, and the pricing is considered solid value for the quality on offer. Staff are known for being welcoming and genuinely helpful, the kind of counter service that makes a visit feel unhurried.
Nick’s operates as a takeaway shop, so there’s no dine-in seating, but it’s a well-suited stop for families picking up dinner, with a kids’ menu available. The shop draws a consistent crowd across the week, and the 231-plus reviews reflecting well over four and a half stars speak to a kitchen that takes its fish seriously.
For anyone in Townsville after a reliable feed of fish and chips, Rosslea is worth the short drive. Phone ahead during busy dinner periods to avoid a wait.

Just tried for the first time recently. Was very impressed with the serving sizes. Tried both a battered and crumbed piece of fish, both were nice. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The lady also chucked in a free lemon and some chicken salt. Keep up the good work !
Fantastic! The barramundi was superb; the batter so light and crispy. Big portion of chips, and they even had irn bru! Very pleasant lady serving.
Perfect after our day in magnetic island. Highly recommend if in Townsville
Fantastic fish and chips that are reasonably priced, always hot and freshly cooked
The service is friendly and welcoming
The Mackerel was very nice. I asked for extra seasoning, and recieved just that, superb. Well done Nick’s.
The only negative is the oil, there’s a bit to much. I do know, when you order fish and chips, you have to expect the oil, but just a bit to much, is all. Value for money was great also, I paid $18 for the dinner forn1 and 2 potato scallops, great price.
We stay in a motel on Bowen Road when we come down from Cairns and dinner is always takeaway fish and chips from here. The mackerel and chips are delicious and the staff friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.
Came from Brisbane and tried 4- other places for some good quality and well priced old school fish & chips and wow the fish was extremely fresh juicy and cooked to perfection and they were more than happy to Grill some fish for me as well as I’ve had a heart attack and can only eat grilled fish and again perfect. That’s just the food…the service and respect you get from the owners is absolutely amazing I feel like family 🤣will be back again & again❤️…Don’t think twice when it comes to fish & chippies ❤️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The most delicious potato cakes I’ve ever had, not oily, not raw potato, just absolutely delicious.
The fish is also battered perfectly and is a great size and thickness.
The customer service is friendly and very welcoming. I live out at Majors Creek and it’s well worth the drive in
