About
Tolga Take Away has built a reputation as the place to visit for fish and chips on the Atherton Tablelands, with many regulars and passing travellers rating it among the best in the region. The fish is cooked to order, with a crispy batter that holds up without being greasy, and the chips come out golden and hot. Portion sizes are generous, which is always a good sign.
Beyond the fish, a few items have made a real impression. The potato scallops draw particular praise, as do the pineapple fritters, which are a crowd favourite for those who like a sweet finish alongside their savoury order. The Hawaiian hamburgers are another highlight, built with a homemade patty and fresh ingredients, and popular enough that some visitors have returned the following day just to order them again. Ham and salad rolls are also noted as fresh and well put together.
Tolga Take Away is a takeaway-only shop, so there is no dine-in seating, but the casual setup suits the location well. Free parking is available nearby, and the venue is family-friendly with a kids’ menu on offer. It is open across breakfast, lunch, and dinner, making it a practical stop at most hours of the day. Payment by card and mobile is accepted.
For anyone travelling through Tolga or exploring the Tablelands, it is a solid stop for a straightforward, satisfying meal. Check the hours before heading in during busy periods.

it the worst food ever, my boyfriend ordered the spanish mackerel and chips, the fish was so greasy the batter wouldn’t even stick to the fish, and it was dripping grease through the paper it was wrapped in.. absolutely horrible, i ordered the chicken burger and the beet root was cut really thick and the chicken was greasy, definitely won’t be back.
Best fish and chips on the tablelands by far. The potato scallops were to die for they were absolute perfection. And the Pineapple fritters were just amazing. Perfect crunchy chips and the fish was delicious. The batter the best I’ve had in a long time.
Another visit and these ladies still do the best fish and chips on the tablelands. The better was crisp and prefect, the fish was juicy. The chips were fluffy in the middle and nice and crunchy on the outside. 10/10 could not recommend them more and the prices are still friendly and value for money
We ordered a steak burger where the steak was 3mm thick. I have never seen a steak burger thinner than one big mac patty. The salad on the burger was good.
We also ordered a chips with cheese and gravy. The chips were alright, but had barely any gravy. There was maybe, a 50p piece worth of cheese. We paid $8 for the cheese and gravy, yet got maybe, 30c worth.
I will not be returning.
We highly recommend the Hawaiian hamburgers. They are so good we went back for seconds the next day. The hamburger patty is homemade, and all ingredients are fresh. The ham and salad rolls are also very nice and fresh. Plenty of parking.
Pretty disappointed with the dinner we got. Normally we are happy with the food but not this time.
Ordered a $16.50 lot burger (came with no egg or bacon) it was also cold.
We also ordered a fish burger with no tomato and BBQ sauce (came with tomato sauce and tomato) the fish was also cold. I had to reheat it and add my own sauce and cheese at home.
Most likely won’t be getting dinner from here again unfortunately.
Service and atmosfere non existent BUT the fish and chips honestly very good. Good portion size. The crumbled one a bit dry. I would go back again.
Lovely hot fish and chips. Fish was big and neither fish nor chips were greasy. Very enjoyable.
I stopped by Tolga Takeaway two days ago and was served by Corie, and honestly, she made me the best fish and chips I’ve had in ages! The fish was perfectly cooked — crispy on the outside, soft and fresh inside — and the chips were golden and crunchy just how they should be. You can tell Corie really takes pride in her cooking. On top of that, she was super friendly and made the whole experience awesome. Big shoutout to Corie for the amazing feed — I’ll definitely be back soon!
