About
Gill’s Seafood & Chicken is a well-regarded takeaway in Port Augusta that pulls in a steady crowd of locals and passing travellers alike. With a strong reputation built across nearly 200 reviews, it has become one of the more popular spots in the region for a solid meal at the end of the day. The shop opens for both lunch and dinner service, and regulars know to arrive early, as the queue forms quickly once the doors open.
The menu goes well beyond the standard fish and chip shop fare. Fresh fish and chicken are the backbone of the offering, and during crab season the shop is known to stock fresh boiled crabs that draw dedicated customers. Steak sandwiches with the lot also get a consistent mention, pointing to a broader menu that caters to a range of tastes. The seafood is noted for being fresh and the overall spread of options is considered genuinely varied.
Gill’s is a family-friendly operation with a kids’ menu, making it a practical stop for families on the road through Port Augusta. Card and mobile payments are accepted, and free parking is available nearby. It is takeaway only, so there is no dine-in seating, but the friendly service keeps things moving at a good pace even when the shop is busy.
Travellers driving through regional South Australia often discover Gill’s through a quick search and find it well worth the detour. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to avoid a long wait.

Nice and friendly staff, obviously do good work with locals with a steady flow coming through. Chips were nice and the fish although a bit greasy, need to be drained more for my liking. The other bits and pieces were quite a let down, could hardly taste the squid in amongst the batter, the scallop (ordered 2, only got 1) were just mass produced rubbish and muscle barely ok.
I think if you want basic fish & chips, pretty good, but outside that meh
Wow … what an experience. We found it wandering around with Google. Without Google, you would never find the shop. It was to open at 5:30, but opened at 5:00 pm. People came from everywhere when the door opened. It’s a classic local fish shop that the ‘in the know’ people seem to use.
We ordered four different fresh fish with the idea of sharing. My wife loved it, which is a high-level test. It appears ordinary on first sighting, but it is lovely in all respects. The owners certainly love being there. They are people, people. (The shark has lots of teeth).
Fish and chicken served are 100% fresh and healthy. Very interesting spread of options available.
During the crab seasons (end Oct-mid Nov onwards) you will get fresh boiled crabs (frozen) and they are so so fresh and right-priced.
Service is always with smile with interesting stories of shark siting or whale siting nearby – host had been in serious fishing for many years and have real life experiences to share. You will not even know how fast the food you ordered is getting ready.
Simple, rustic sea food shop with no glamour or glitter.
Don’t miss the real shark fin kept on the show case.
My husband and myself had just driven from Elliston to Port Augusta staying overnight to head home. Very hot day. Found Gill’s on google. Very friendly staff and we had 2 steak sandwiches with the lot which were excellent. Fresh, great flavour and cooked to perfection. Do yourself a favour and visit Gill’s
Delicious fish and chips. Very busy shop with most of the customers being locals. What a warm and friendly community you have there. We were passing through the town and found good reviews of this place on the net. Absolutely worthy of the good ratings.
We were travelling through Port Augusta and visited Gill’s shop. Gill and his staff were super friendly and very welcoming. Definitely loved and respected by the locals, as they have been there for over 30 years. The food was very nice and fresh. Gill certainly looked after us. Would highly recommend this little take away shop, if you want great old fashioned customer service.
Lovely down to earth owners, great food & service. Nice big pieces of fish and loads of chips for 2 people.
Food was great.
Service – lady was too busy serving customers
