About
Sotos Fish Shop is one of Semaphore’s most well-known fish and chip shops, drawing a loyal crowd from well beyond the local suburb. With over fifteen hundred reviews and a solid reputation, this takeaway operation has built a following on freshly peeled, hand-cut chips prepared daily and fish done the old-fashioned way. It’s a formula that keeps regulars coming back and brings visitors across Adelaide just to get their order in.
The menu covers the classics and then some. Fish and chips are the headline act, but the shop also runs grilled fish options, steak sandwiches, burgers, yiros, and a range of grill items, making it a genuine crowd-pleaser for groups with different tastes. The chips, cut fresh on the day, are a regular talking point. The gravy gets a mention too, with many regulars rating it highly. Service moves at pace even when the queue is long, with multiple staff on deck to keep things rolling during busy periods.
Sotos is a takeaway-only setup, with no table service or reservations, so the drill is straightforward. Order, wait a short while, and head off. Many locals phone ahead to streamline the process, especially during the dinner rush. Free street parking is available nearby. The shop welcomes families, groups, and tourists exploring the Semaphore area, and the kids’ menu adds to the appeal for families looking for a quick fish and chips meal on the go. Delivery is also available for those not making the trip in person.
Phone ahead during busy periods to save time on your visit.

Ordered spontaneous fish and chips to eat down at the jetty. The hand cut chips are delicious but a bit bleak looking….could be cooked a little more. The fish tasted great and a decent enough size, but the batter on all product lacked any crunch (leathery….none of the typical air bubbles).
If you’re actually hungry I’d suggest sizing up the chips, this is half a 2-person serving.
Super busy shop. Generous portion. Only for take away. Traditional British style of fish and chips shop. Gravy is super!! Sauce, lemon etc need to order. Drink is just grap from the fridge once you make a payment. Varieties of seafood.
11 bucks for hot chips. Yeah cool..the chips served were disgusting. How anyone could let this leave there shop.is beyond me. -5 stars. Ironically the owners just double down and stand by they’re chips. Clearly can’t take criticism. This place is a far cry of what it used to be, back when angelakis bros were even promoting them. We tried again the other for just basic serve if chips, and yet another epic fail by the business..we are officially done with sotos now. Steer clear.
Just love this shop! We travel from Enfield for good service and delicious food. Order on the way and it’s always ready! Delicious and good friendly service. They are good at it! We will be back soon.
Waited half an hour for 3 pieces of fish and chips, which I am normally ok with as I know the quality of this place. However, ended up with cold, undercooked, soggy tasteless chips and fish that tasted off.
Both myself and my family have been coming to this institution since I was a child, truly has gone down hill. Lady at the front counter had no idea what she was doing,
To top it all off ended up with food poisoning the day after so bad I couldn’t work!!!
Avoid at all costs, truly a shame
Ordered some grilled fish to snack on which was tasty, fairly quick service and several hands on deck to get everyone served and fed.
Food was a 9/10 but forgetting the 3 x tartare sauces that we paid for, unforgivable. Nothing worse than driving 30 minutes, opening up your parcel of goodness only to find no sauce. No one eats fish and chips without sauce….
Been going to sotos for many years. Has always had the best fish and chips but sadly last 2 times the fish and chips have now become some of the worst in Adelaide. Why have you allowed this to happen?
