About
Kraken Fish and Chips has built a solid reputation in North Hobart, drawing regulars and visitors alike with freshly cooked fish and a menu that caters to a wide range of dietary needs. The shop offers dine-in, takeaway, and delivery, making it easy to enjoy a proper feed however suits you best.
The fish is the clear highlight here. Blue grenadier and flake are among the options, and the batter and crumb work draws consistent praise for its crispness and moist flesh underneath. Squid strips are a signature worth ordering, and the broader menu covers potato cakes, dim sims, and fish burgers alongside the classic fish and chips. Kraken also carries a fully separated gluten-free menu, which has made it a destination for coeliacs visiting or living in Hobart. The chips have their fans, particularly for generous portion sizes, though they can be hit and miss depending on timing.
The venue is casual and family-friendly, and the staff are known for attentive, thoughtful service. Queues do form during peak lunch and dinner periods, so arriving a little off the rush is a good idea.
For anyone hunting down quality fish and chips in North Hobart, Kraken is well worth putting on the list. Phone ahead for orders during the dinner rush.

Kraken Fish and Chips Hobart – A Must-Try!
We had an amazing experience at Kraken Fish and Chips in Hobart! The customer service was outstanding, with the staff being super thoughtful. They noticed we had parked in short-term parking (something we hadn’t realized) and kindly offered to bring our food out to the car so we wouldn’t risk getting a fine.
As for the food, it was absolutely delicious. We got a pack that included crumbed fish, prawns, calamari, and chips – everything was cooked to perfection. The crumbed coating was wonderfully crunchy and not oily at all. This is hands down one of the best fish and chip experiences we’ve had. Highly recommend!
My partner is coeliac and we already had this shop on our radar before travelling to Hobart. Thankyou for a 5/5 meal, all completely gluten free. Blue grenadier, potato cakes, chips, prawn cutlet and dim sim. We came in the afternoon around 3.30 so it was peaceful in the shop. Owner was very helpful with the gluten free stuff and the product speaks for itself. Thank you for a great meal
A very nice fish & chips store that is closer to our accomodation.
Feel very pleased to find a food place opening on Good Friday. Battered fish is nice and crispy outside, juicy and very well cooked inside. Crumbed squid and prawn are also fresh. Chips are thick cut and nice. The only thing is maybe the oil has been used for quite some time and is not that clean, so we can feel the not that friendly oily taste.
Best fish and chips in Hobart! Freshly cooked, delicious and unbeatable service with an inclusive and greatly appreciated menu catering to gluten free cravings. This is my favourite place for fish and chips in Hobart 🙂 don’t sleep on it
Had the barramundi fish and it was absolutely spot on, perfectly crispy, fresh, and full of flavour. The group also ordered a fish burger, which was just as good. Everything we tried was cooked really well and tasted great. Highly recommend!
We loved it amazing young lady working .
The fish and chips was outstanding.
We got chatting with the people next to us.
We found the hole experience amazing.
My only gripe was they were not busy and they should be. As a chef I am picky so thank you. I wish you all the success in the world. Well done.
Found this traditional fish & chip shop while visiting Hobart. It had good reviews so I thought I would try the fish. I got a blue grenadier crumbed with a drink. It was quiet so the order was quick and the lady serving was lovely and honest, I originally ordered the most expensive fish but after I asked her for a recommendation, she advised me to try the grenadier and it was delicious, crispy crumb and moist on the inside, thank you 🙏
Firstly told us they ran out of flake, only to be told 30 mins later they had flake… they hadn’t started cooking our order.
At this stage it wasn’t looking too good.
Surprisingly though, the food turned out okay, albeit a bit greasy and the chips were also cold.
Thumbs up for the flake, it was fresh and tasted a flake should. My partner has to remove the batter for said greasiness already mentioned.
They probably need to look at changing the type of chips they serve, they need a bit of improvement overall.
