About
Sail Away Cafe with Pedro’s is a women-owned fish and chip shop sitting right on the Ulverstone waterfront, serving a menu that covers all the classics alongside a few surprises. Fresh gummy and blue grenadier are the headline acts, and both attract strong praise from regulars who note the fish is prepared fresh and the oil is clean and well-maintained. Battered scallops are another favourite, and the chips consistently come out golden and crisp. The menu extends well beyond seafood, with souvlaki and a kids’ menu rounding things out for groups with varied tastes.
The venue offers both dine-in and takeaway, with around eight tables and outdoor seating that makes the waterfront position a genuine drawcard on a fine day. It is family-friendly and wheelchair accessible, with free parking nearby. Coffee, including iced coffee, gets a solid mention from those who linger after their meal.
Reviews are mixed overall, with portion sizes and consistency drawing some criticism alongside the considerable praise. The shop earns decent reviews across its 200-plus ratings, with the highs being genuinely enthusiastic. Those who strike a good visit tend to describe it as among the best fish and chips they have had.
For anyone passing through Ulverstone or looking for a relaxed coastal lunch with fresh fish options, Sail Away Cafe with Pedro’s is worth keeping on the list. Check opening hours before heading down, particularly outside peak season.

5 star takeaways
Great to go on a sunny day and sit at the outdoor tables.
Large menu with something to please everyone.
All the meals are cooked well, chips are golden and crisp. Great souvlaki/kebabs . Everything prepared fresh, so you wait, but it’s worth it because the food is good
This shop has definitely turned a corner and is giving great takeaways. Best in Ulverstone
Overjoyed to discover this place. The best chips I have had in 15 years (since I left NZ)
Price is very reasonable and cheaper than places which aren’t as good.
The chips are cooked to perfection and you can tell the oil is fresh, generous salting (we went chicken salt and it packs a tasty punch)
My daughter said the nuggets are better than McDonald’s which is a big call for 6 year old
Lovely service by a polite young lady but unfortunately the chips were overcooked though a few were nice but due to far too much salt I had to throw them out. Dim sims were nice but could of spent the money elsewhere.
Might come back and try again but ease off on the salt please as service is wonderful and location is nice.
Ordered through uber eats, paid over $50 for it all including priority delivery and it still took over an hour. There was no salt on anything like i asked. They were unable to give us seafood sticks, which is fine if they were to ask us what we wanted as replacement instead of deciding we wanted 6 more potato cakes, when I only ordered one to begin with. The gummy i ordered was soggy and tasted foul. I called the store to tell them that I wasn’t impressed with my order and that they should’ve asked and the young girl on the phone said “we were busy” which I understand but that isn’t an excuse for shitty service. She then said “okay thanks bye” and hung up on me. Wouldn’t recommend.
Yeah i would give this place a miss. Charging premium high end prices for average at best food & You dont get alot for your money. Small portions of food for high end money. & the food is deffinately not high end. Average at best. There’s deffinately better options in Ulverstone than here. Seems nothing has changed in 12 months & the reviews have only got worse. How are they even still in businesses with so many very unhappy customers. Needs to be shut down & new owners to give it fresh renovation & a new look & new name? Hopefully at a more sensible lower price with staff who actually know how to cook a qaulity meal.
The best fish and chips in Aus. Fresh gummy is to die for. Service is amazing. Oil is clean. Product is amazing. Location is stunning right on the waterfront. Seasoned to perfection.
Young bloke running things is a legend. I highly recommend and suggest a healthy tip for the excellent product and staff.
Got a family pack with a side serve of scallops. Food was barely edible. Soggy and tasteless fish with squid rings that a cocky salmon would turn away from. Scallops were destroyed by a fluorescent yellow batter that tasted like mud. The prawn were some of worst freezer burnt examples I’ve ever eaten. For $80, you’d think that the fish and actual seafood would be decent but it made the chips seem like the best part. Last time we ate here we said never again, and now I know why. The staff were more interested in smoking cigarettes outside and staring at the sting rays than actually preparing food worth the money they are asking.
We had the blue grenadier and chips, plus six battered scallops. It was all very good.
Iced coffee was lovely as well.
About 8 tables to sit at, but no sun or rain cover.
