About
West Essendon Fish’n’ Chippery sits in Aberfeldie and serves the kind of straightforward fish and chips that locals in the area have come to rely on for a no-fuss meal. The shop has a classic, old-school feel, the sort of place where the focus is on feeding people well without any pretence.
The homemade potato cakes are the clear drawcard here, priced at $1.40 each and regularly praised for being freshly made. Regulars often receive a little extra, which speaks to the friendly, generous spirit the staff bring to the counter. Chip portions are noted as being on the generous side, and the pricing is considered good value for the Aberfeldie area, where comparable fish and chip shops tend to charge noticeably more.
Service is quick and friendly, with the staff described as approachable and attentive. The shop is well suited to families and operates as a takeaway, making it a practical stop for lunch or dinner. Free street parking nearby makes the visit even more straightforward.
The shop holds a solid reputation among locals, and while it is very much an everyday neighbourhood fish and chip shop rather than a destination, those after honest food at fair prices will find it fits the bill. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to save waiting.

Awesome classic fish and chips thick batter and chicken salt
Another week another rip off fish and chip shop. Prices are on the up and quantity has gone down. If you’re trying to feed a family keep driving.
I could seriously understand if the food was great but wow this was unbelievable. I should have known by only 3 staff working on a Friday night.
Potato cakes were paper thin and soggy.
Chips weren’t flash and you could probably count them in the photo.
Fish was paper thin and like rubber.
Another terrible disappointment and still on the hunt for a new fish and chip shop in the area.
Your everyday local fish and chip shop. Food was “as expected”, the young lady serving was friendly and excellent at her job. The shop decor is the same as all the other local fish and chip shops – nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about. I will be regularly going back.
Pretty average fish and chippy. Food wasn’t great (1x potato cake, 1x Chiko roll, minimum chips). But the prices are cheaper than a lot of other fish and chip shops, particularly in this area (which is really pricey). Minimum chips was perhaps a little smaller than average, but not by much – it didn’t feel like a rip off, just another handful of chips would bring it in line with what I’d expect.
Service wasn’t the best, but they understood my order and gave me what I asked for. They accept card and don’t have either weekend or card surcharges.
The lady is so nice! Always extra potato cakes given too (homemade!) and only $1.40 each.
Old school fish and chips.
Generous portion sizes. Fish has a lot of batter.
If really feel hungry don’t go west essendan better be hungry and eat something from ground, they have zero service unhygienic and they don’t give you even tomato sauce with meal you have pay for it, this is my best advice don’t don’t DONT EAT HERE EAT FROM GROUND
I ordered potato cakes. When the lady brought it out she wore no gloves. Just bare hands.
I gave them the benefit of the doubt
I didn’t mind because it was just me. The potato cakes weren’t great either
