About
Jim’s Fish & Chips in Blackburn South has earned a reputation as one of the more authentic old-school fish and chip shops in the area. The kind of place where the smell of the fryers hits you at the door and instantly recalls memories of after-school dim sims and potato cakes shared with mates. Regulars describe it as a proper Greek-style chippery, and the menu reflects that heritage with battered fish, chips, king prawns, calamari, mushy peas, and coleslaw all on offer.
The flake is a clear favourite, deep-fried to a crispy, non-greasy finish that keeps people coming back. House-made potato cakes are thin and golden, and the chips come out a consistent golden brown. The shop also caters for gluten-free requirements, which is a genuine bonus for families with mixed dietary needs. More than a few regulars make the trip from neighbouring suburbs specifically for this place, passing closer options along the way.
Jim’s operates for lunch and dinner as a takeaway and delivery venue, with free street parking out front and wheelchair-accessible car parking available. The shop is family-friendly and accepts card and NFC mobile payments. No reservations are needed, just turn up and order.
Decent reviews from a loyal local following suggest this Blackburn South fish and chip shop punches above its weight for a strip-mall takeaway. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to keep wait times short.

Good old fashion Greek fish and chippery. The flake batter is deep fried perfectly – crispy and not too oily. Chips are golden brown. I drive 10 minutes from Surrey Hills just for this place despite having a few places closer to my area, as these are mainly run by Chinese owners who does not have the experience to do fry ups as well as this shop. Prices very reasonable.
fish is fresh and coating is dry and crispy, not oily and soggy, very nice.
Shockingly bad.
The food was cooked in burnt cooking oil. Everything looked fine, but tasted terrible.
Chips had no salt, fish was fried, despite us requesting grilled. It is Genuinely the worst fish & chips i have ever had. How do you mess up chips!?!? The fried snickers bar was the only thing edible about the meal. Called to complain, no answer. Skip this one.
A fantastic experience at this fish and chip shop. Fish was cooked perfectly and best home made potato cakes! He also gave extra food
I will be coming back!!
So far, best local fnc shop I’ve found in Blackburn.
It’s oldschool, the smell of the days fat in the fryers is there, that kinda smell that greats you with memories of happy times munching on potato cakes and dimmies with mates at lunch or grabbing a bite on the way home from work before you have to be civil and eat rabbit food. And Jim’s doesn’t let you down, the fish was bang on, the chips cooked to perfection and the man has ham and cheese potato cakes! The kind that, to paraphrase a favourite author: make your arteries go clang! by looking at it!
If you die, you will be happy about it, trust me.
If you like delicate and fancy maybe look elsewhere, if you love food that makes you happy, this is worth a try.
Unreal – arguably the best fish shop in Blackburn. Really authentic old school fish and chip shop. the potato cakes were thin and crispy (must be made in house), fish was crispy and fresh, even had gluten free for my partner and all reasonably priced!
Hadn’t visited Jim’s for a few years but really felt like a steak sandwich. What a great idea! Old fashioned SS with the lot plus a bag of chips and potato cake. Chips were crisp, golden and delicious. Hard to believe he’s been there for 42 years. Highly recommended.
Calamari rings (1.80 each) were flavourless and were not eaten (binned) – so disappointed
Steamed dim sims (1.80 each) satisfactory.
Snapper battered (12.00 each) dry n flavourless.
Chips below average ($12.00).
Fast n attentive service – thank you
Cost – $82.90
Not recommended!!!
