About
Fins & Co. Fish and Chippery brings a solid neighbourhood fish and chip shop experience to Brunswick West, with a menu that punches well above the suburban average. The fish is battered to order and the flathead fillets draw particular praise from regulars who rate freshness and delicate texture above all else. Chips are proper chippy chips, generous in size and cooked right, and the value for portion size is something the shop is genuinely known for. Menu items carry imaginative names, with the Mighty Melville burger and the Albion among the signatures that keep people coming back.
The shop operates as takeaway and delivery only, with a small amount of outdoor footpath seating for those who want to eat close by. Alongside the fish and chips, the menu covers burgers, dim sims, and a kids’ menu, making it a practical choice for families in the area. Service is polite even during busy lunch and dinner periods, and free street parking is available on Melville, with tram and bus stops nearby.
This is a well-rated fish and chip shop for Melbourne’s inner north, sitting comfortably above four stars across a solid number of reviews. It draws both regulars and first-timers who stumble across it and quickly return. Cash is preferred, with a small card surcharge applied. Open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to avoid a wait.

If there is somewhere selling better cooked seafood in Melbourne, I’ve yet to find it. I’ve caught and cooked my own fish for decades, so I’m super fussy, but never disappointed by this place. Succulent, fresh, delicate flathead fillets in a light crispy batter. Doesn’t get any better. Prawns are amazing,
Lovely family run business, too.
Honestly really dissapointed.. im not one to usually write reviews.. very rarely i do. To make it short and sweet. Very average quality food for extremely price! Dimsims were overcooked and burnt. Medium chips size is pathetic.. see photo attached. Food quality was honestly garbage.. and to be charged $65 for whats in the photo… it’s pathetic. Lower ur prices or actually make nice food
Best fish and chips in town. Grass fed beef Burgers are must!
Excellent service, excellent food and always great to know that meat is grass fed and everything is fried in lard. If you want to find a traditional old school pizza shop this is the place to go. God bless
The Mighty Melville burger and the Albion do not disappoint! Lovely staff & value for money. I have one last opportunity before leaving to go home, and I will take it.
Chips were proper chippy chips and the fish was fresh with the perfect amount of batter. Amazing value and portion size
Middle of the road
My regular F&C shuts down across xmas/early Jan so I use this time to try others for comparison. This time Fins came up as an option.
I arrived toward the close of what was clearly a very busy trade – lots of delivery drivers arriving to collect last minute orders & a few locals wandering in too.
Being the closing hour, their fish stocks were down to almost nothing. I ordered Whiting in lieu of my usual Snapper, and some potato cakes & dim sims.
Couldn’t pay with Amex so paid cash.
A good 15mins later I was asked what order I was waiting on. At that point I was informed remaining online orders had already taken the last Whiting. Asked for Blue Grenadier instead.
When eventually I got my order, I noted that the fish I was given was cheaper than what I’d ordered (according to the menu board on the wall), & was told that they’re actually the same price despite what the menu board says.
The prices shown in store are different again to what’s displayed on the google listing so it’d be worth getting them all aligned from a Fair Trading Act POV.
The fish was fresh, & battered just before going into the fryer – which is a better experience than I’ve had from other F&C places near here.
I find very few operations get the batter right (from my POV) – often it holds too much oil from the fryer even if allowed to drain. Fins was no exception here and as such, the fish carried the flavour of the oil over and above all else.
Being end of trade, i could taste that the cooking oil was at the end of it’s viable use. Everything had a mildly burnt taste, even though the food was not overcooked.
F&C is not five star dining, so I never expect anything fancy from any shop. On a future visit I’d probably consider trying grilled fish to see how they are without the batter, and I’d go earlier in the day to get the fish I want, and ensure anything from the fryer has fresher oil.
Sometimes the planets align and you discover a good place by accident. This fish and chip shop, which is on Melville near Albion, will have had some new customers tonight – me included – because the competition was either closed for its seasonal break, or there was no parking near the two F&C shops a few blocks south on Melville Road (courtesy an event at Estonian House).
Menu – They offer all the usual fish, chips, burgers and other items. Some imagination has been gone into the naming of menu items, giving it a local feel. Pricing is okay.
Nice burger. About 1/4 smaller than the ones at the other shops and around the same price for the same kind of burger. Good quality, tasty, fresh fillings and because the burger was a little smaller, it was not messy to eat by comparison to some of the local competitors. This is a plus; you could probably eat this burger walking / in the car and not get it everywhere.
Service – it was busy and service was polite.
Patrons – looked like a mix of delivery drivers and other customers.
Parking – out the front. (Tram and bus stops also close by.)
Seating/tables – some on the footpath. A few seats to use when waiting are also available inside. It is a very small space inside – both for patrons and the team. It’s not designed for eating in, which is fine.
Accessibility – there is a step and the door frame is solid enough to be gripped for balance. Unlikely to be wheelchair accessible unless there is a ramp hidden away somewhere.
Payment – It takes cash and advertises that it prefers it. 1.99% cc surcharge on a Visa.
