About
Mako’s Fish and Chips is a Ferntree Gully favourite for families and regulars alike, offering dine-in, takeaway, and delivery at prices that won’t stretch the budget. The menu covers the classics, from fish and chips and potato cakes to dim sims, with lamb souvlaki and burgers rounding things out nicely. Gluten-free options are available, and a dedicated kids’ menu makes it a practical choice for families heading out for a casual meal in the area.
The fish and chip burger is the dish most talked about, and for good reason. Regulars describe it as a proper, traditional version done well, the kind that’s hard to find at many suburban fish and chip shops. The lamb souvlaki also draws repeat visits, and some patrons have been coming back to Mako’s for years, a sign that the shop has built a loyal following in Ferntree Gully.
Quality can be uneven across recent visits, particularly around some specialty items, so keep expectations realistic when ordering outside the core menu. That said, the staff are consistently noted as friendly and approachable, and the shop’s value-for-money positioning makes it accessible for a wide range of diners.
Delivery is available for those who’d rather eat at home. Phone ahead during busy periods to avoid a wait.

The 4 prices of flake we ordered was not flake. It was dry and like rubber and the thinnest peice of fish ever.
When I rang to complain the owner only made excuses didnt care and lied. Never going there again disgusting.
In the owners reply I was rude ha. You were rude and rip people off. It was not flake and that’s that. Move on and stop charging people for something they are not getting
The shop is run by a rude obnoxious woman, her equally rude husband and an extremely rude order taker.
If you want soggy miserable fish and chips. This is for you. Add in being treated poorly.
When I attempted to raise the food quality issues, I was lectured and told that’s how it is, then being told ‘it’s busy’. ‘Thats why the food is not as good as usual’ LETS BE CLEAR. THIS MAY BE THE WRONG BUSINESS FOR YOU.
And being abused for asking for a refund by the shop owners and a school age server, just completed the experience.
See the picture. This is $10 of chips by the way from the last visit. Tried again. How silly of me.
Oil is filthy. Fish is paper thing and miserable. Do your self a favour. Go elsewhere.
GF Fish and chips – ok.
GF Steak sandwich – worse than awful, it was dry, overcooked and tasted like tyre.
For $40 for one that was disappointing.
Girl on the phone taking the order and then afterwards the feedback, was lovely though.
Ive been going to this place for 8 years and the food is amazing the husband and the wife that has been working there are great and very kind people if your around the area and want to go to a fish and chip place this is the one
I fish I looked at the reviews before walking into this fish and chips takeaway. I honestly didn’t think fish bite, potato cake and steamed dim sim can taste as bad as that…$24 with a can of drink and the only thing I actually finished was the can… unbelievable. So angry 😡
All too often people do bad reviews and share nothing but negativity but rarely give small business the credit they deserve.
Tonight the team at Makos blew me away with one of the best traditional Fish & Chip Burgers I have had in ages , sadly the art of making a proper classic Aussie Hamburger has been almost lost as many flock to the golden arches or similar for poor substitute of a burger.
Do yourselves a favour and support this great little Fish & Chip shop at the base of the Dandenongs, get yourself a real proper Hamburger with a side of chips and just go and sit in one of the many beautiful parks in the area and enjoy 🍔
Owners were very rude, yelled and swore at me when I corrected them on my order. Then when I started eating my chips I found multiple long hairs in amongst them and the mayonnaise was very salty.
I went here las wek to buy fish. I got fish and it tasted like fish. The chips tasted like potatoes for some reason. The soy sauce was black and tasted strong. When I went to complain to the owner who refers to herself as aunty told me no refunds as the food was perfect. I’m very disappointed I wouldn’t go if you want weird tasting food
