About
Minerva Road Fish Shop has built a solid reputation in Herne Hill as a takeaway spot that many locals feel keeps the traditional fish-and-chip experience alive. Hand-cut chips and battered fish are the signature, and regulars speak warmly about the freshness of the fish and the generous serves that make it genuinely good value. Potato cakes and hamburgers round out a menu that leans into the classics, with pricing that has more than a few first-timers doing a double-take at how reasonable it all is.
The shop carries the kind of atmosphere that recalls an earlier era of fish and chips in the Geelong region, where the owners know the faces coming through the door and newcomers feel just as welcome. Families are well catered for, and the venue draws a loyal crowd for both lunch and dinner. Card and mobile payments are accepted, and free parking makes a quick stop easy.
It is worth noting that recent feedback has been a little mixed on consistency, with some visits producing the hand-cut chips the shop is known for and others falling short. Asking for chips well done is a tip that regulars pass along for a crispier result.
For anyone after a no-fuss, takeaway fish and chip shop in the Herne Hill and broader Geelong area, Minerva Road Fish Shop delivers the sort of straightforward, unpretentious meal that keeps people coming back. Phone ahead during busy dinner periods to avoid a wait.

The best in the business. What an amazing place. Thanks for feeding my family every week with the most amazing fish and chips we’ve ever eaten.
Remember the old days when fish n chips were made the proper way with the owners knowing everyone or even making the blow ins feel welcome ? This place is so traditional and possibly the last of its kind in Geelong. Food is always fresh and delicious…? In one word… perfect. Reminds me of my youth (1980’s) every time !
Came down from Melbourne for the long weekend, stopped by this very local spot. Fantastic value and quantity of food. Ask for extra well done chips for more crisp. Batter could be crispier.
This place took me right back to my childhood fish and chip nights. No frills, good old fashioned fish and chips.
Got thr wrong order 2 weeks in a row they dont use surnames for orders only first names and the guy on the phone was rude. and yeah im using a second sccount ive made a review like this before lived in the area for 10 years never had this shit happen.
We called to place a phone order and the man was so short on the phone. Then he told me it would be 45 minutes. I understand they’re busy, and that’s fine, but this was too long for us to wait. So I politely explained that it was too long for us, and he hung up without saying anything.
First time we ate here was over 12 months ago and it was phenomenal. Always swore to come back when in the area. Ordered from here the other night and was bitterly disappointed. Chips were frozen generic style, NOT hand cut, and covered in chicken salt. Fish was doughy, tough and really fishy like sardines. Very off putting. Needless to say, we took a couple bites and binned it. Would have returned it only we were staying over the other side of town. Not sure what happened to this place but sadly we won’t be back.
First time here. Was driving past so stopped. Food was good, service was very friendly and the place was clean. But the price! OMG! Hamburger with the lot, 10 bucks. Potato cakes a dollar. Minimum chips 3 bucks. Ridiculous. My local is 8 bucks.
It was a 15 minute drive home, food was still hot. This is my new F&C shop. I’ll drive past 10 to get here. Thank you.
I can not believe the prices and quality of food. The lamb souvlaki is amazing. I had them2 nights in a row. This is now my takeaway night location. Very happy I stumbled across Minerva Rd fish and chips.
