About
Captain K Fish & Chips is a well-established fish and chip shop in Lilydale, serving the eastern suburbs of Melbourne with dine-in, takeaway, and delivery options. The menu covers the classics, with barramundi and flathead as the signature offerings, alongside potato cakes, souvlaki, chicken schnitzel, and a dedicated kids’ menu that makes it a solid pick for families. Free parking adds a practical convenience for those coming in for a sit-down meal.
The shop has a loyal following, and regulars speak fondly of the nostalgic, Melbourne-style fish and chips that many have been eating here for years. The dining area is clean and roomy, and the kitchen can turn out hot, fresh food when it’s firing well. Barramundi and flathead are the clear menu highlights, and those who stick to the fish tend to come away satisfied.
That said, the experience here isn’t entirely consistent. Opinions on chip quality and order accuracy vary, and a handful of regulars have noted service slip-ups on occasion. The shop draws a decent mix of locals, families, university students, and tourists, and at its best it delivers the kind of straightforward, honest fish and chips that the Lilydale area does well.
For anyone in the eastern suburbs after a familiar, affordable feed with dine-in comfort and delivery on the table, Captain K is worth considering. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to confirm your order is in the system.

Authentic taste of Melbourne fish and chips. Used to be one of our family’s favorite for decades. Chips are hot and crispy, fish has the local taste as nostalgic. Hey! Food does bring the memory back doesn’t that!
Food was hot and fresh however, all 3 burgers were soggy (probably from waterlogged lettuce not being drained), chips had no salt despite extra being requested, one burger patty not cooked through. Won’t be returning. We shouldve tried the other burger joint up the road.
Had the misfortune to buy take away fish here recently. They took my order and when I called back to pick up 20 minutes later they said they had no record of it so had to wait another 29 minutes while they finally cooked grilled fish.
The size of the 2 pieces of fish was the smallest that I have ever been given!!! It was laughable and didn’t taste nice at all. Wasn’t cheap either so would not recommend this rip off place .
Due to our trusty local fish and chip shop being closed for the New Year break (love ya, Ming ❤️), we ventured out and tried the next closest option. What followed can only be described as a tragic, greasy betrayal.
To start, two thirds of our order was missing and honestly, that may have been a blessing.
The food we did receive was borderline inedible. The fish was the smallest piece of fish I have ever laid eyes on, yet somehow also the most expensive I’ve ever paid for at a fish and chip shop.
Two friends ordered a chicken schnitzel burger with cheese. What arrived? Two burnt pieces of TOAST, some sad yellow lettuce, dry chicken, and no cheese whatsoever. But fear not… there was a lonely dollop of mayo, bravely holding it all together.
Another friend ordered a mixed souva and instead received what can only be described as a stinky fish souva, a surprise no one asked for. The chips were genuine mush with zero salt, and the potato cakes were so small they could’ve passed as oversized scallops.
When we politely advised the shop that they had forgotten most of our order, they had the audacity to tell us to sort it out ourselves. The service was absolutely disgusting, with zero accountability taken.
I have never felt more unwell after eating fish and chips in my life. Save yourself the disappointment, the hunger, and the regret, DO NOT go here.
This place isn’t a fish and chip shop… it’s a public service announcement for why health inspections exist. The “fish” was a slab of lifeless mush entombed in a batter so greasy it could’ve doubled as engine lubricant.
One bite in and I genuinely wondered whether I should call a priest or a plumber. Whatever once lived in the ocean died again in that fryer.
The chips were a war crime. Limp, overcooked and somehow cold while still leaking oil. They tasted like they’d been cooked yesterday, reheated badly, then personally insulted before being served.
Staff? Utterly uninterested in the concept of service. Ordering felt like l’d interrupted an extremely important nothing. The shop itself looked like grime had achieved permanent residency… the kind of place where you wipe your feet on the way out.
Do not eat here. Do not recommend it. Do not make eye contact with it while driving past. If you value your taste buds, stomach lining, or basic human dignity, stay far away.
Ordered a couple hotdogs in batter. If are looking for that unique carnival styled grease filled flavourless batter – this is it! Had a few bites then straight in the bin..
On top to match the theme- no sauce bottle on the counter – just mini sauce packets at 70 cents a pop. Came down originally to get something from the smoke house over the road (unfortunatly they were closed).
After driving for 4 hours decided to get some fish and chips for dinner and I understand it was late just after 7.30 but I order lamb souvlaki with extra garlic sauce which it didn’t have there was no onion on it and the meat tasted as tough as tyres like it had been cooked more than once. The burger with the lot the pastor was raw, and the fish pack the fish was the size of a fish finger and I ordered 2 fries dim sum and 2 potato cakes the dim sums were overcooked and the potato cakes were terrible. In the end the food ended up thrown out on the ground because everyone refused to eat it
Great fish and chip shop, in my mind one of the best I’ve been to in the eastern suburbs, clean, roomy, tasty and even dining area.
