About
Mitcham Fish and Chips is a popular takeaway spot serving the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and it has built a solid reputation among locals for fresh, well-prepared fish and chips. The fried flake is the shop’s signature, regularly praised for its moist interior and well-executed batter. Potato cakes are another highlight, arriving crispy on the outside with a soft, fluffy centre, and they draw repeat visits on their own merit.
The menu covers plenty of ground. Alongside the flake and potato cakes, the kitchen turns out dim sims, calamari rings, seafood sticks, hamburgers, souvlaki, steak sandwiches, and fritters. The lunch pack, which includes a piece of fried flake, a dim sim, a potato cake, and chips, is a practical and well-regarded option. Gummy shark (listed as 100% gummy flake) is available for those who prefer it over other varieties. It is worth noting that chip quality attracts mixed feedback, with some visits delivering excellent results and others falling short, so ordering during a busy service may help.
The shop is family-friendly and takeaway-only, with free on-site parking and card and mobile payment accepted. Staff are consistently described as warm and welcoming, which adds to the relaxed, casual feel of the place. For anyone looking for a Mitcham fish and chip shop that puts genuine care into its seafood, this one is well worth adding to the list.

Wow – random stop last week with my lad. Ordered 2 x flake, 3 fried dimmies, 3 potato cakes and chips – plus 2 cans of coke. Went to Coles and grabbed a bottle of sauce. Went to local park – BEST I’VE EVER HAD….and I’m 49 years old. Did i happen to turn up the day the oil was changed??? Dunno – but the chips where so golden in color and crunchy outer….. fluffy inside, two good sized flakes with crunchy batter and 6 cakes!!!! $2 cokes!!! I’m going back this Friday and i live in Chirnside Park!
Smallest most pathetic potato cake I’ve ever seen for $1.80 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Horrendous. Easily the WORST fish and chips in Melbourne. The chips I ordered were suspiciously too white and lacked that signature golden sheen, the bare minimum to aspire to; and lo and behold, I eat one chip and it’s completely soft, no bite at all.
The chips were soft, too soft. Giving the box a shake did not yield itself to any pleasant acoustics that crispy golden chips usually have. Truly awful, disgusting. I wouldn’t even permit seagulls to eat these; that would be animal abuse. I ate about half before getting fed up and throwing them in the garbage.
The chicken salt left an artificial, synthetic, chemical sweet taste to the chips too. A penny could not even be spared for buying decent chicken salt.
And $5 for a minuscule amount chips that other joints would give you atleast double for that much? This is the real insult. I’ve been to so many fish and chips shops, searching and ranking the best around Melbourne — fish and chips are my favourite and are my goto takeout, always has been growing up. So take it from a fish and chips connoisseur: do NOT order from here.
Had the lunch pack. 1 pce fried flake, dim sim, potato cake and small chips for $14.00.
Everything was great. Chips were perfect. Flake was really good and potato cake was fantastic.
Ordered the Lunch Pack and a Super Burger. Food was really good and service was great.
Very solid fish and chips. Everything was cooked well and it definitely hit the spot. My highlight was the potato cake. Crispy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. I also had the steak sandwich which was loaded with ingredients. Would recommend.
Sam and Cam are top blokes, friendly and considerate, especially when they were under pressure and behind on orders. It was worth the wait.
I’ve been coming here since I was 14 years old (27 now),traveling up to 30 minutes over the years to come here being the best fish shop around. I have always dreaded the day the original owners retire & it’s finally happened.
Ordered my usual lunch pack & it just isn’t the same. Flake portions have halved & everything was slightly undercooked & very oily. It has been a successful, profitable fish & chips for many years so why change it. I hope you’ll read this review, observe the photos & take it on board. Plate photo is what I received on Thursday night & photo in the box is how it was a couple of months ago under original owners.
Honestly heartbroken😂 really just hoping it was a busy or off night & it isn’t usually like this. might give it one more go. But if this is the quality of food the new owners are happy with, you’ll lose a lot of loyal customers that were gained over the years. Very nice staff & atmosphere, but they asked for feedback and this is it.
Best of luck
