About
Flake Haven Fish & Chippery has built a solid reputation in Mitcham as a fish and chip shop that locals return to week after week. The flake is a clear crowd favourite, served with a light, crispy batter that regulars describe as having a tempura-like quality. Alongside the flake, the fat, chunky chips and homemade potato cakes round out a classic trio that keeps people coming back.
The shop itself is clean and well-run, with efficient service that keeps orders moving at a solid pace. Takeaway and delivery are both available, making it a practical choice for a weeknight meal or a relaxed family dinner at home. The family-friendly atmosphere and free parking on site add to the convenience, and the menu suits kids just as well as adults.
Opinions on value vary a little among recent visitors, but the quality of the cooking is consistently praised. The oil is kept clean and hot, which makes a real difference to the finished product. Onion rings have also drawn attention as a menu item worth trying alongside the shop’s better-known staples.
With a well-rated presence among Mitcham fish and chip shops and a loyal following built over many years, Flake Haven is a spot that clearly rewards a visit. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to avoid a wait.

I’ve been regularly having food from Flake Haven for over a year now ever since my partner moved close by and it is the best fish and chip shop I’ve ever had food from. We literally order takeaway weekly from here. I’ve had the chips, chicken burger, potato cake and fish from here. Batter is super crispy on all and the portion size is great. Prices are also really affordable and probably slightly cheaper than most fish and chip places, especially ones of this quality. My partner and I usually order $5 chips (enough for 2-4 people as a side/snack) or chicken burgers/fish if we’re having dinner. My partner has tried the lot burger before and has liked it too. Our classic afternoon snack order is $5 chips with extra chicken salt (they don’t charge you for the extra salt). Staff are all friendly too which is a bonus! I think locals in the area have the same opinion because the shop always seems to have orders going, even at non-peak times (waiting time is around 10 mins btw). We always call beforehand then pick it up 10 mins later.
TLDR: 5 stars, quality and the price of the food are amazing, good to support a local business during COVID-19 too.
Super fast, delicious food. No one standing in store, all waiting outside to collect their orders. Well done flake haven.
Clean hot oil so frying is as good as it gets, the onion rings are a much try too. 👍 Still great food, fast, good service with a friendly smile.
The fish and chips from flake haven fish n chips were beautiful. We’ve been going there regularly for the past 30 years through several owners. The current one is producing beautiful fish n chips. I would recommend them to anyone.
Use to be very good. Couldn’t find our online order even though we quoted our order number.
Chips were not crispy as usual. Spring roll was something I’ve never had before (dogs got it as it tasted atrocious)
Shame as it use to be very good. Not sure why it’s gone down hill.
We got takeaway. A friend recommended this place for the flake, the chips and the potato cakes. We have not strayed far from another local in the last 5 years so we took a risk. I love fish n chips so I’m picky. OMG! No disappointment here. The batter on the fish was outstanding- close to a tempura. The crispness survived the short car ride. The chips were of particular note; fat, chunky. BUT crispy. The potato cake was thick and full of fresh potato slices but I must admit- not as crunchy as I like them to be. It sounds gross but my work canteen does a triple fry for me and they are half as thick so they are a crunch made in heaven. But I reckon I could ask the guys here for an extra fry and see what happens. Highly recommend and I think I’m ready to swap.
Read the reviews, but very let down. Hardly any change from $10 for a very tiny piece of fish (whiting) but a pile of chips that was appropriate size. Disappointed as for the $ I expected a decent fillet. Never again, will go elsewhere locally where I know I can actually get a decent fillet for the $.
Very clean and friendly fish and chip shop, with excellent quality food, that is always of a high and consistent standard – my go to fish and chip shop this side of Melbourne!
Try their home made potato cakes!
Ordered a Hamburger w onion & tomato. They don’t butter buns apparently.
I asked for tomato sauce which is included in a plain burger plus salt and pepper and to have my burger cut in half.
Got charged 20cents surcharge; meat patty well overcooked & dry, no sauce, no salt & pepper and I had to remind the guy to cut it in half!
A total waste of money. It was a very dry, horrible, tasteless burger. Never again.
