About
Off The Hook Fish Shop is a well-regarded fish and chip shop in Wendouree, serving the broader Ballarat area with a menu that covers the classics and then some. With a solid four-plus star reputation built on over 400 visits, the shop has clearly earned its following among locals and newcomers alike.
The food is a genuine drawcard. Regulars single out the fish and chips as among the best in Ballarat, with chips described as restaurant quality and batter that delivers on every order. The homemade potato cakes have become a talking point in their own right, praised for a light, crunchy exterior and a perfectly cooked centre. Dim sims are another favourite, and the hamburgers deserve special mention. They are generously sized and have built a strong reputation, with the chicken schnitzel burger a standout choice. For a suburban fish and chip shop, that range is impressive.
The service is just as consistent as the food. The owners are hands-on and genuinely invested in the experience, and the shop itself is kept spotlessly clean. Families are well catered for, with a kids’ menu available and a relaxed, casual atmosphere that makes it easy to bring the whole crew. Takeaway is the primary format, with free on-street and car park parking making pick-up straightforward. The shop accepts card and mobile payments, so there is no need to hunt for cash.

Great staff and the quality of the food is amazing. This is probably Ballarat’s best hamburger shop!! The hamburgers are huge and worth every $$
The chicken schnitzel burgers are all so big and very yummy, dim Sims are really nice The chips are great and theres such a variety of food on offer even the pre made salads are very nice. All in all make sure you check this place out you will not regret it!!!
This place use to be awesome but the new owners have no idea. When you place your order they don’t listen to your order, instead they invent a new order for you that is nothing like what you want! Soggy chips, burnt dim sims, Garlick sauce on souvlaki when you tell them twice NO GARLICK SAUCE! However if you want cheese? sorry, NO CHEESE for you!
The BEST fish n chips around. We visited today and has a lovely chat with the new owners who are friendly and do their utmost to please. The shop may be basic but it is spotlessly clean. The pricing is definitely on par with others. The food is great, the chips were cooked in fresh oil and were crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside. We had grilled Grenadier which was perfectly cooked.
Highly recommended
Absolutely brilliant food. Chips are restaurant quality as is the rest of the food. My husband, Greg, and I moved to Ballarat in August and have had fish and chips here several times. Top of the range food and service provided by the owners and the young members of the community they hire. Well done. Will definitely be back for more. Thank you.
Used to go here regularly then things changed. Sadly food is always over cooked and taste is average at best. I think oil is used for way too long and not changed as taste is poor. After many visits I will not be going back again to get the same average food as I consider it a waste of money.
The most amazing home made potato cakes we’ve ever had! Light, crunchy on the outside, perfectly cooked through and service and hospitality that went above and beyond! Thank you!!
Lovely kind people cooking top tier fish and chips. Obviously use clean oil.
It’s the first time that we’ve had overcooked chips, potato cakes and dim sims !
The dim sims had shrunk by a third, the potato cakes were brown and the chips tasted awful.
We discovered this when we got home.
The care factor is zero !!! This order should not have been served up.
The owners are the cooks !
