About
Bassendean Fish & Chips is a women-owned fish and chip shop in Bassendean, Western Australia, offering dine-in, takeaway, and delivery across the local area. The shop runs through breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, with a kids’ menu and vegetarian options rounding out a broad menu suited to families.
Reviews are genuinely mixed, and the experience seems to vary from visit to visit. On positive visits, regulars point to thick, flaky snapper in a well-executed batter and chips cooked to a proper crispiness. The shop’s cleanliness and freshness have drawn favourable comments, and the owner’s attentiveness on good days, even checking chip crispiness with customers, has left a strong impression on some visitors. On less successful visits, though, some have found the service unwelcoming and the chips underseasoned.
Outdoor seating, free parking, and a wheelchair-accessible entrance make the venue practically convenient for a range of customers. The shop is family-friendly, and the inclusive, welcoming atmosphere it aims for is reflected in its LGBTQ+ friendly approach.
For those in the Bassendean area who haven’t tried it, the shop may be worth approaching with an open mind. Phone ahead during busy periods to check wait times.

8 Reviews on “Bassendean Fish & Chips”
Not sure what the true story is with all the bad reviews, thought I’d give this place the benefit of the doubt.
Grabbed some takeaway and was pleasantly surprised. The Hake/Snapper were thick, flakey and very nicely battered. Well seasoned chips and very generously battered crab sticks.
I’ve been to many suburban fish and chip shops and this one’s certainly up there (also one of the few that are open for lunch). Not my local shop but I’ll definitely be back if I’m around the area, a hidden gem.
Such pleasant service from the owner, and as soon as we walked in, we could smell cleanliness and freshness. The chips were cooked to perfection (she even asked us to check the crispiness! 😊), deliciously crispy, and yummy, juice pineapple fritters.
Worst fish and chips!
To my disappointment went to bassendean fish and chips yesterday, the owner was very rude and unaccomidating to our requests and information with the menu. Asked for chicken salt and vinegar, chips were bland and tasteless along with everything else we ordered. The paper was soaked through with oil.
Not enough chips! Soggy batter!
Don’t waste your time and money here.
If I could give it 0 stars I would, place is filthy lady is very rude, asked for a small chips got told $10 minimum lady says “you think I going to cook $5 chips for you? My fryer is 40 litres go away” astonishing.
Looks as though health inspector has never been through the door place is a dive.
I honestly don’t get what up with the low star rating, but yesterday I wanted to buy fish and chips for my family, and all the other places was close so I went to this one, and I walked in and order what I wanted and she was genuinely seemed sweet and hard working and so I waited for my order. Than when she finished packing my order she genuinely took her time and explained to me that it would be better if i called and ordered since I wouldn’t have to wait and I can just come and pick it up and the food was absolutely fantastic, so if you just hating for nothing than your just a loser and need to do better.
Call tonight to place and order and the lady was extremely rude, so I asked if she could please not be rude to me I just wanted to place and order..she said “I am not being rud and put the phone down on me. Does anyone know of any other good fish and chips places on Belmont seems as Bassendean fish & chips won’t take me order 🤷🏽♀️
I should have read the Google reviews beforehand. Yes all the 1 star reviews are spot on. Though the lady was not rude. I have to say coming from Sheffield in the UK, my local fish n chips shop, Two Steps, on Sharrow Vale Rd, is the UKs oldest going back to 1895, so it’s going to be hard to beat! This one reminded me of the fish n chips shop in the comedy film East is East. If you have not seen it suggest you watch.
Most of my meal this evening went in the garbage, the best part was the Heinz baked beans which came out of the can and I prepared myself.
I called up to order Friday dinner. The woman who answered the phone let me list all the items I wanted, then told me she would not start cooking until I paid upfront using PayID. I declined, as it is standard practice to pay on pickup. The woman was rude during this interaction.
I then called the Old Trout, who took my order and adhered to standard practice by accepting payment on pickup. The food at the Old Trout was delicious, and I will always go there from now on.
I have since noticed that many other customers have left one star reviews for similar reasons, and the owner’s replies to those reviews come across as sassy and unprofessional.
