About
Watson Takeaway has built a strong reputation among locals and visitors alike, sitting comfortably well above four and a half stars across hundreds of reviews. Located in Watson, ACT, this neighbourhood favourite covers far more ground than a typical fish and chip shop, with a menu that stretches from its celebrated crumbed fish and chips through to pizzas, burgers, and steak. The crumbed fish in particular draws consistent praise, with regulars describing it as spectacular, and the chips as genuinely delicious.
Beyond the signature crumbed fish and chips, the menu features calamari rings, prawn cutlets, potato cakes, and seafood sticks, all freshly cooked to order. The potato cakes have their own devoted following, and more than a few people have cited them as the best in Canberra. For those after something different, the pizza range earns its share of praise too, with options like the Spanish and Mediterranean varieties drawing repeat visits. Staff are known for being warm and accommodating, and the kitchen is happy to work with special requests.
Watson Takeaway caters well to families, with a dedicated kids’ menu, outdoor seating, and wheelchair-accessible facilities on site. Best take away in Canberra hands down.
Pizza was great and they have THE most yummy potato scallops/cakes. Service was excellent. If you have good memories of take away shops back in the day this one is for you.
Freshly cooked crispy fish and chips with prawn cutlet, calamari rings and tartare sauce😋 and the delivery was very quick.
My Wife had the Spanish Pizza, I indulged in the Mediterranean Pizza, and we shared the Greek Salad, and they threw in a couple of cheeky potato scallops that we managed to devour on the way home.
Pizzas were magnificent with just the right amount of topping, with the base crispy and cooked to perfection, whilst the Greek salad was fresh with a beautiful Greek dressing.
10 out of 10. A must for good food lovers.
Watson Takeaway is a real local gem. The food is consistently great and the service is just as good. The staff are always friendly and genuinely receptive to special requests, which makes every visit feel easy and welcoming.
The pizzas are some of the best in town, and the crumbed fish is absolutely spectacular, a standout every time. We’ve been here many times now and are always treated like family, which really says a lot. It’s the kind of place you keep coming back to because it feels like your local in the best possible way.
Highly recommended.
By far the best potato scollops & value for buck in Canberra!
Such a great local takeaway shop! Scallops are nice and crispy. Chips are a massive portion too, a minimum chips is enough to make me full. However the chicken salt is practically tasteless, even when I ask for extra chicken salt, so I often need to put more on at home. Otherwise a great place!
I visited the Watsons Fish & Chips Takeaway, ACT, today.
Once I stepped in, a wave of nostalgia and a flush of familiarity came along.
Peering into the counter displays, I saw things I had not seen in while – the battered sav, chiko rolls, corned jacks, crumbed prawn cutlets, etc.
However, I also quickly realised the familiar milk shake, meatpie, sausage rolls were missing as were the cartons of milk, eggs and fresh loaves of bread – all of which likely sums to such establishments no longer being called ‘milkbars’.
However, the high ceiling and the patterned concrete flooring did somewhat complete a picture of familiarity and smells of a time passed not all that long ago.
The highlight of the visit came in the form of burly but very courteous owner-operator Con, and his wife Julie, at least once you get to talking mode with him especially, likely leading me to order more than I should have and ultimately eating more than I should have.
Regardless, whatever I ordered and ate reminded, coincided and tasted exactly with my memory of what a fish & chips milkbar was.
I enjoyed my quiet mid-week autumn afternoon and relatively inexpensive fish-&-scollops meal on the provided tables and chairs placed under shade at the front of the shop and I recommend it to all without hesitation.
