About
Ocean World Seafood Market in Cairns North is a working seafood market with an on-site kitchen, which means the fish on the plate was swimming in the sea not long before it arrives at your table. The setup is simple and honest: browse the fresh catch, pick what you want, and have it cooked on the spot or taken away. Dine-in seating is available on deck, with a sheltered area for those who want to sit and eat.
The menu leans heavily on local and line-caught seafood. Tiger King prawns and lobster are the signature offerings, and the Spanish mackerel burger has developed a following among regulars. From the kitchen, battered barramundi and crumbed calamari sets are popular choices, and the coral trout fish and chips draws plenty of praise for its crispy batter and fresh, flaky flesh. Oysters are available by the dozen at prices that consistently surprise visitors in a good way. Crustaceans, molluscs, platters, and gourmet delights round out a menu that goes well beyond standard fish and chips fare.
For anyone hunting quality fish and chips near Cairns, Ocean World offers a solid four-plus star reputation across well over a thousand reviews, which speaks to consistent quality and friendly, full-service hospitality. Free parking is available on-site, and the shop accepts card and mobile payments. There are no toilet facilities on the premises, so worth keeping in mind before you settle in for a long seafood lunch.
Open Saturday to Thursday from 9am to 7pm, with extended hours on Friday until 8pm. Getting in early is a good idea if you want the full selection.

We ordered a dozen fresh oysters, half cooked lobster with 5 cooked prawns from the fresh seafood section. From the kitchen we ordered battered barramundi, crumbed prawn cutlets set, crumbed calamari set and chips. The oysters, lobster and prawns were very fresh and tasty but oysters & lobster was slightly icy/frozen where we had to wait for it to melt a bit. The battered barramundi was the highlight and is probably one of the best fish and chips we had. Batter was crunchy & crispy and the fish was extremely fresh. Most importantly, it did not feel oily at all. We have eaten many fish & chips, some of the best came from Geelong and Philip Island. And the fish and chips here (yes, the chips as well were crunchy and soft inside) was definitely rank top 3 for us. The calamari rings were good too. There were no tables inside just outside and it was getting a bit hot as we were having them for lunch. Couldn’t find toilets nor hand wash basin either. Definitely a place to visit if you are seeking top notch beer battered fish & chips.
I have only been here for chips. They are nice enough but the portions are small / under filled. Both time I got an extra large as I had lots of people to feed and both times the container was half full. The first time I put it down to bad luck but the second time I tried was the same. Pictures from both occasions.
I am very unlikely to return.
Cheapest fresh oysters $28 a dozen! The coral trout fish and chips was creamy and soft! The barramundi was a bit firmer but the batter was nice and crispy!
Loved this place especially on the combo of the oyster and the shrimp. Strongly suggest you to come. However, please come earlier so that you can have choosing right.
Extremely disappointing dining experience. When purchasing sashimi and oysters, the restaurant refused to provide even the most basic condiments (soy sauce, wasabi, and lemon all required additional payment). Before making the payment, I had specifically asked the staff if they could provide a small amount of soy sauce and wasabi, but after paying, a female staff member with a high ponytail rudely refused and insisted that condiments must be purchased separately. The service was terrible, making the whole experience feel like “paying to be mistreated.” The food quality was nothing exceptional, yet the prices were unreasonably high. Definitely not recommended!!
We paid $50 for the duckies delight. When we received it there were 2 “pieces of bara” which were barely bigger than the size of fish Bites.
The chips were also poorly cooked with them having a soggy texture and not having a crisp outer with a fuffy centre.
The salad was passable but slightly wet.
For the price we would have expected a better sized fish.
We will not be dinning here again.
Came here as a tourist, they offer a sufficient variety of seafood here, and also two sheltered dining tables. The service here was great. If they provide condiments, that would be even better
Great friendly service. The fish was cooked to perfection and yummy to eat . Second time customer and would eat here again . When in my travels .
