About
The Fishbone is a well-regarded fish and chip shop serving the Highfields community, carrying a strong reputation built on generous portions and quality cooking. The signature dish, crumbed cod with chips, is the clear crowd favourite. The cod arrives thick-cut, white and flaky inside, with a light, crispy crumb that holds together well. Chips are golden and crunchy on the outside, soft through the middle, and clearly made from decent-quality potatoes.
Beyond the cod, the menu covers plenty of ground. Snapper, barramundi, calamari, and potato scallops all feature, along with chicken nuggets for younger diners. The fish burgers deserve a mention too, served in fresh, generously sized rolls and packed full of salad. Those after something lighter will find coleslaw and garden salads available as sides.
The Fishbone is family friendly, with a kids’ menu and dine-in seating for those who want to sit down rather than take away. The entrance and car park are wheelchair accessible, and free parking makes things easy. Gluten-free options are available for those with dietary needs. The shop serves lunch and dinner across the week.
It is worth noting that timing matters here. A small number of diners have found issues with orders placed close to closing time, so phoning ahead during the dinner rush is a sensible idea. For most visitors in the Highfields area, The Fishbone delivers a solid, satisfying meal that keeps people coming back for that crumbed cod. Check the hours below before heading in.

Been going to this place for years, but not anymore. Ordered about $80 worth for the family. We got home to find the large chips not in the bag, and the meat in the double cheeseburger was still raw. Called up and was told they can re-cook the chips and burger. I said I didn’t want a burger anymore, and maybe swap it for a couple of dim sims (a cheaper alternative). Was told they would only replace it as another burger. Went back again, got home and this 2nd burger was cooked less than the 1st and very raw. Went back to show them and they asked if I want a refund. I said I’ll take a refund for what they think is fair, considering this is the 3rd time I’ve been here tonight. They decided it was only worth refunding the $15 for the burger. Guess that says it all.
I don’t like leaving bad reviews so I’ll give you 5 stars anyway but my barramundi was raw, couldn’t eat it. Got it just before close so couldn’t call the store.
Food is lovely, large serves for family. The wait time was just shy of two hours and not a single smile from any staff. If wait times weren’t so long I’d return.
Had fish and chips for one . Huge piece of cod crumbed beautifully cooked. Chips were crispy and a lovely fresh salad , tartare sauce included. Very enjoyable meal.
First time visiting, very nice fish and chips, happy to serve us on closing time. Great staff, definitely one of the best fish and chips I’ve had for a while.
I enjoyed my fish burger there last. The roll was huge and very fresh. Packed full of salad. I had grilled cod. Not bad. Will order crumbed cod next time.
The Fishbone Highfields served up a great meal. The cod was a generous, thick cut piece — fresh, white and flaky — with a light, crispy golden batter.
The chips were golden and crunchy, soft inside, and clearly made from quality potatoes. A nice bonus was the range of sides available, including fresh coleslaw and garden salads.
Very satisfying and well worth a visit.
