About
The Stunned Mullet is a well-regarded fish and chip shop in Henley Beach, drawing a steady crowd of locals, families, and visitors alike. With a solid reputation across nearly 700 reviews, it’s clearly a favourite stop in this part of South Australia’s western suburbs.
The menu covers the classics done properly. Flake is on offer, and the deep-fried prawns have earned particular praise, with regulars noting they’re succulent and hard to stop eating. Calamari is another highlight, often described as a standout order. Blue Grenadier with chips makes for a reliable, well-priced meal, and potato fritters are worth ordering if you’re after something simple but satisfying. The fish burger rounds out a menu that leans into traditional fish and chip shop fare without overcomplicating things.
The venue goes a step further than most, offering dine-in and outdoor seating alongside takeaway, plus a kids’ menu that makes it genuinely family-friendly. Halal food is available, and the shop is wheelchair accessible. The atmosphere is casual, and free parking on-site means arriving is hassle-free. Under new ownership, service has remained warm and the food quality consistent with what long-time visitors remember.
Open for lunch and dinner daily, with brunch also available, The Stunned Mullet suits a quick beach-walk refuel or a sit-down meal with the family. Phone ahead during busy dinner periods to keep things moving.

Good service, their fish and chips were delicious as well as their chicken fillet burger. Everything is made very well and is worth it.
I would recommend coming earlier as I got there an hour before they closed and they had no more yiros which was disappointing.
The fish and chips here are great, and it’s wonderful that they sell some South Australian seafood. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, even offering my young boys a lollipop, which was a lovely touch. However, the shop is a little underwhelming, which was surprising considering they won ‘Best Fish and Chips.’ I would love to see them expand their local offerings to include SA Calamari rings and SA Prawns on the menu to match the quality of local fish.
They were out of a few items, maybe because it was near end of day, but the succulent deep-fried prawns made up for it. I could have eaten a dozen more. Fish burger was pretty good, too. Outstanding customer service, especially the young guy working the register, and the manager who brought me a bowl of water to wash my hands.
New owners have done an amazing job with great service and keeping the food tasting exactly as you remember, delicious! Well done!
We stopped in for a little snack during our big beach walk and tried the flake and potato fritters to refuel. I took a bite and instantly knew I had to snap a pic for a review. So simple but done correctly and well. I can’t wait to come back for a proper big order to try more off the menu.
Yummy Blue Grenadier and chips and calamari to die for… Definitely a take away place and handy to many places… Sustainable packaging, except the tartare was in plastic… AoK
It is unusual for me to mark down the food for The Stunned Mullet. However, my last order was partially very disappointing. Following the change of ownership a year ago, the quality of the food has been pleasantly maintained. However, my last order, Seafood Dish for One, it’s hard to describe what the supposed calamari rings were. They appeared very uniform, as if from a supermarket packet. The texture was not of a calamari ring but more of pieces of seafood product squashed into a ring. The taste was not of calamari.
The quality of the rest of the order was as expected, good. As a devoted customer of The Stunned Mullet for many, many, many years, I have the expectation that the same high quality is served on each and every occasion.
Please stop serving up the dreadful product. I’d sooner have prawn substitute than be served the below standard of pretend calamari.
This used to be a favourite of ours for our family and when friends visited – it was always fresh and flavourful. Unfortunately since new ownership / staff, we have tried this place twice once when the new management were being trained up and again recently to see if initial teething problems were sorted. Nope the fish was dry and overcooked and the chips were substandard. Not worth the money they charge and definitely doesn’t feel anywhere near the product it used to be.
