About
Coorong Cafe is a one-of-a-kind fish and chips spot on Hindmarsh Island, South Australia, set up in a pair of food vans right on the water’s edge where the Murray River meets the sea. The setting is genuinely special, with gazebos for shade, plenty of outdoor seating, and a relaxed atmosphere that draws tourists and locals alike. Live music is a regular feature, adding to the unhurried vibe that keeps people coming back.
The food leans into the region’s natural larder, with locally sourced Coorong fish taking centre stage. The mullet fish burger is a standout, consistently praised for its freshness, and the seafood more broadly earns a strong reputation for quality. Dine-in and takeaway are both available, and the menu runs from breakfast through to dinner, covering a broad spread of the day.
Coorong Cafe is family-friendly and welcoming to groups, solo travellers, and everyone in between. Wheelchair-accessible facilities, including car park, entrance, and seating, mean it’s easy for all visitors to enjoy. Free parking is available on-site and on nearby streets, which is handy given how popular the place gets on weekends. Vegan and vegetarian options are on offer alongside the seafood, and beer and cocktails round out the drinks list for those settling in for a longer visit.
With a well-rated reputation across hundreds of reviews, this Hindmarsh Island cafe is worth a detour for anyone exploring South Australia’s Coorong region. Check opening hours before making the trip, as sessions can vary by day.

What a great way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon. There was live music to eat our lunch by. There is 1 portable toilet if the urge comes. There are plenty of tables and chairs and 4 gazebos if you need shade. The food was excellent, and I had the best fish and chips. The service was quick and friendly and the view was spectacular. If there is a number of you , you need to get there early or take your own chairs as it gets very busy. They also sell alcohol , but a limited range.
Coorong Cafe is an awesome spot set up in a couple of food vans right on the water’s edge. The relaxed vibe makes it a perfect place to chill out.
The seafood is fresh and excellent quality, especially love the fish burgers and mushy peas.
The views are amazing! Just make sure to go when the weather’s good to get the full experience.
Great food. The flathead was great value for money, with 5 fillets per serve. Not greasy, and fish batter was light and crispy. Chips were well seasoned and nice and crispy.
Many alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available.
Outdoor seating only.
This unique little gem is mega popular. Staff was lovely, food was great and the views were to die for. Where the Murray meets the sea. Pet friendly also.
Look… great location but for the price, the wait and quality of the food it is definitely not worth it at all. I’d rather go into Pt Elliot and eat at the Flying Fish Cafe.
We had our 8 month old daughter with us and wanted to get out the house on a nice sunny day, but after getting attacked by not only the price of a incredibly small portion of fish (without chips & dry), flys and mosquitoes it wasn’t the most enjoyable experience. We had to wait 30mins for our food and because there wasn’t any available seating in the shade with our baby we just got our food, left and ate at home 😂
Mullet fish burger amazing! So fresh and delicious.
Was a bit of a weird weather day.
Not normally one to bag service on reviews. But when you wait 1 hour an 25 minutes for large chips gravy on the side wich was stone cold an 2 bugers other people receiving there food well after we ordered 3 tired Hungry kids. Ruined the afternoon for us! Then to top it off received attitude for a staff member when I said we’ll just cancel an go!
Won’t see me back there!!!
Enjoyed amazing local Coorong grilled fish, great live Blues music, and a beautiful sunset. What more could one ask for?
